Where Is the Conservative Debate? (Jeffrey Lord piece)

Why does the Republican National Committee always get to set the debate rules?

Where is the conservative debate?

These questions and others come to mind as Fox’s Chris Wallace promises the Washington Post that he has “some doozies” planned for Thursday’s debate. Doubtless he does. But Chris Wallace, ace journalist that he is, is not what the media likes to deride as a “conservative ideologue.”

I understand why the RNC has involvement here. But why must all these debates be “sanctioned” by the RNC? Where, for example, is the conservative debate at someplace – to pick a not-so-random place – Hillsdale College? With panelists like, say, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and Mark Levin and Laura Ingraham? Or Steve Deace? Or For America’s Brent Bozell? Or Tony Perkins? How about marching them in to the Heritage Foundation for a grilling by Heritage policy experts – and Heritage president and ex-Senator Jim DeMint? Where are panelists from places like…well…Conservative Review? Or other tried and true conservative publications like The American Spectator or National Review or, well, you get the picture.

The point is that conservatism itself never seems to be the topic of conversation in these GOP-centric debates. Think for a moment about the recent study out of Harvard’s Kennedy School on the role of conservative media in shaping the debates of the day. New York Times reporter Jackie Calmes wrote this extensive paper with the lengthy title: “THEY DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT GOVERNING” CONSERVATIVE MEDIA’S INFLUENCE ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

Conservatives are the least organized of any political group. They have very little influence.
