“The lion had a tracking collar on and was in a protected area. It was lured out of said protected area with the carcass of a dead animal and killed.”
Baiting big cats is an accepted and time honored way to hunt them. Big game animals leave protected areas all the time. When they leave, they are fair game.
You make is sound as if the hunters walked up to the lion, held a steak under its nose and gradually and carefully “lured” it carefully, and unwillingly, out of the reserve.
Most likely, the lion considered part of the area outside the reserve part of its territory, and was attracted to the bait.
Neither of us know exactly what happened.
But, most collared lions that are killed by hunters in Zimbabwe are considered to have been killed legally.
