An American Dentist Killed Zimbabwe’s Famous Lion

Cecil the lion, a famous black-maned resident of Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park, died at the hands of an American dentist, conservationists claim.

They say Walter Palmer paid $50,000 to hunt and kill Cecil with a bow and arrow. The incident occurred around July 6, with a professional hunting outfit reportedly luring Cecil outside the boundaries of the protected reserve using a dead animal as bait.

“Mr. Palmer shot Cecil with a bow and arrow but this shot didn't kill him,” Johnny Rodrigues, chairman of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force, said in a statement. “They tracked him down and found him 40 hours later when they shot him with a gun. Cecil, who was known all over the world would have earned millions of dollars just from sightseeing. Walter Palmer apparently paid $50,000 for the kill."

It wasn’t the first kill for Palmer, who has multiple photos posted on the website Trophy Hunt America showing the Minnesota resident posing with dead lions, rhinos, water buffalo, warthogs, and other animals.

The Telegraph is reporting from two independent sources that Palmer was indeed the hunter listed on the permit documents, and a spokesperson for Palmer told the news outlet that Palmer believes he is the one responsible for the lion’s death.

It’s not assuming. You cannot READ where it says it was LURED OUT?

WITH A CARCASS?

Furthermore, one doesn't bait a specific lion any more than one chums a specific shark.

Sometimes, even on teh intarwebz, you can spot a hunter, or even someone with common sense, just from a single post. The urban fools who are the targets of this story can't even imagine the simple truth you elucidate: even if one lays out bait (which is illegal in most of North America, but not Africa) you can't expect a particular game animal to turn up, or stipulate the time or any other particulars.

Someone was looking to make a political case and this Dentist is the unfortunate person fitting the target profile. The physical hunter became the politically hunted.

Yup, this guy was set up, and to add insult to injury, no one cared who he was in particular, just that he could be used for their purposes. Baited, as it were.

...code in our family. You don’t kill something that can’t be eaten.
******************************
Back in the ‘60s, while visiting my wife’s family near Waco TX, her Uncle asked if I’d like to do some shooting. HECK Yeah!

He had some acreage that was being taken over by armadillos, with all their digging and burrows. We took his shotguns and walked around for about 2 hours. Dispatched over two dozen of the critters. .....Armadillos are NOT to be eaten, but killed.

[Yup, this guy was set up]

Tell us, then, on the intarwebz as you say, how the guy was “set up” if a specific animal wasn’t lured out.

This should be good.

“As for me, I’d rather spend opening day weekend of pheasant hunting season walking fields with a buddy and maybe a dog...”

I used to have a personal bias against folks that used dogs and/or bait to hunt bear or cats. Until I met some and talked with some. That is how they hunt, and how they grew up hunting. And now that has been taken away from them in many places.

With regard to your idea of hunting (mine too!), the Liberals are going after that as well. A Liberal will say it isn’t fair that you use a shotgun - with hundreds of pellets - what sport is that!!!??? And a buddy? That is even worse - two against one. And don’t even get me started on using a dog - the dog just runs up to a bird - points at him, and bang - you shoot the bird. (And your dog is run ragged - that is animal cruelty in itself!)

And how much hunting do you do on public lands? Those birds are for the enjoyment of all - and you kill them!!?? And even if you are on private property - how many of those birds live some of their time along public roads, parks, etc.

And decoys should be banned - that is just as bad as hunting over bait. Perhaps worse - all those ducks had to be killed just so they could be stuffed with stryofoam so they would float!

Armadillos are NOT to be eaten, but killed.

You can make an edible stew barbecue out of them.

Before having a go at new posters why don't you respond to mine?

Do you have any comprehension as to how large Hwange National Park is?

In such a huge area as Hwange, do you recognize the improbability of a lion that sometimes lived inside the park and at other times outside was a "park favorite"?

Do you understand that the guide did just what wildlife documentary photographers do which is to bait the area?

Do you understand that if the guide put a carcass out, who was to say a leopard, or pack or hyenas, or jackals, or wild dogs, or other scavengers wouldn't come along to claim it?

You’re not going by what was written in the article.

I have responded to you which is a waste of time.

You cannot read the article which tells the tale.

You have your own version you’ve come up with. Fine, tell it to someone else.

Do we have a case of a dentist with Kardashian ethics? Maybe Hollywood will give him his own reality TV show so our youth can learn more of their new morality just like they did for Caitlin where 5 million dumb axx Americans tuned in to watch and “learn”.

This type of trophy hunting takes only deep pockets. It certainly doesn’t make him macho, or a man, or skilled, or brave. He needs to hunt with a spear for that prestige.

I’d support his extradiction to Africa just as I would support the US going after some African who poached a polar bear in Alaska. I believe in accountability, which we see less and less of in America. We find reasons not to hold them accountable.

Where in the article does it say the dentist hired the guide to kill the lion you call Cecil?

Where in the article does it say there is any evidence that the dead lion is Cecil other than the dead lion having a black mane and an old lion you call Cecil has gone missing in an enormous park?

What crime did the dentist commit?

OK, show me where I said he hired the guide?

LOL

Now you have to resort to things I didn’t type.

Good. You’ve got your own version of that as well.

Fine. You and your friend work out the whole scenario between ya.

It's late and I'm just going to assume that you've had a few drinks. I asked you to support your argument with quotes from the article but you can't... and so you twist it.

I think it also safe assuming that the closest thing you have had to a wildlife experience is feeding squirrels and pigeons in your city park.

Oh, I forgot, you like to make up your own version of things.

Yeah, go argue with someone else.

No I am going by the article which doesn’t contain all the nonsense you typed.

But then, I’ve shown that (and others too) several times.

Yeah, go argue with someone else.

I'll go at anyone else coming on this thread with anti-hunting bias like you have.

No, just your anti-hunting bias.
