A South Florida man has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in Key West.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Harlem Suarez, a/k/a “Almlak Benitez,” 23, of Key West was posting extremist rhetoric on his Facebook page which promoted the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a foreign terrorist organization.
That caught the attention of the FBI.
The criminal complaint states Suarez told an undercover FBI informant that he wanted to make a “timer bomb.” Suarez bought galvanized nails, which were to be hidden in a backpack and remotely detonated by cell phone, states the complaint. It also says Suarez planned to bury the bomb at a public beach in Key West and detonate it.

Why do these people keep using the WMD label? That only applies to atomic, biological, or chemical weapons that would be used to attack an entire city. Even a 2000 pound bomb is not classified as a WMD.

You hate to think that ISIS would target “gay friendly” places due to being popular with the gay community. But, what would liberals say, if an unthinkable event happens in such a place??? Considering how the Muslims hate homosexuals and throw them off of buildings?????

I am glad that this guy was caught, if the reports are true.
I will also admit to being somewhat concerned these days.
We know the IRS was used for criminal activity. Nothing is being done about it.
If one agency is being used improperly, what’s to stop others from be used by the same players improperly?
Most of us have something laying around that looks like it could be used in a bomb. What’s to stop an agency from trumping up charges and taking out people they want to?
For that matter, what’s to stop them from planting evidence and trumping up a story on top of that?
You know, I want to trust our leaders and our government agencies, but they don’t seem to have a clue what their actions do to our trust these days.
Do I wish any individual or government agency harm? Absolutely not. I’m just an honest citizens having to accept what the reality is these days.
And these days, I’m not convinced they don’t wish me and others like me harm. That’s a pretty strange position to be in having stridently defended these agencies almost my entire life.
My political leaders think I’m more of a threat than Islamists from terrorist nations. Very very strange world we live in these days.

To a devout Muslim a gay beach is likely a symbol of Western decadence and a target that will gain one instant access to Heaven if destroyed.

The photo of the suspect (and the target) flashed me back to the murder of the Miami fashion designer - by a guy homosexually exploded by the victim when he was a younger who sought revenge.

(2) the term "weapon of mass destruction" means--18 USC 921
(A) any destructive device as defined in section 921 of this title;
(B) any weapon that is designed or intended to cause death or serious bodily injury through the release, dissemination, or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals, or their precursors;
(C) any weapon involving a biological agent, toxin, or vector (as those terms are defined in section 178 of this title); or
(D) any weapon that is designed to release radiation or radioactivity at a level dangerous to human life
(4) The term "destructive device" means--
(A) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas--
(i) bomb,
(ii) grenade,
(iii) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces,
(iv) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce,
(v) mine, or
(vi) device similar to any of the devices described in the preceding clauses;
(B) any type of weapon (other than a shotgun or a shotgun shell which the Attorney General finds is generally recognized as particularly suitable for sporting purposes) by whatever name known which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and which has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter; and
(C) any combination of parts either designed or intended for use in converting any device into any destructive device described in subparagraph (A) or (B) and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled.
