Minn. Lawmakers to Propose National Guard Members Carry Weapons at Recruiting Centers

Several state lawmakers plan to introduce legislation that will make it legal for Minnesota National Guard members to carry weapons at recruiting centers, or whenever in uniform.

State Sen. Paul Gazelka, R-Nisswa, says the killing of five military personnel in Tennessee is not to be taken lightly and said, "It is time we make sure our Minnesota National Guard members can have the ability to protect themselves when in uniform."

Gazelka said "our guard members are targets wherever they go in uniform because they represent the United States and there are those who would do harm to them for that simple reason."

Sen. Gazelka would like Gov. Mark Dayton to order the directive now, but said "this legislation would get the ball rolling, if the governor does not wish to act."

Gazelka said there were seven other states, including Wisconsin, that allow National Guard members to carry their weapons while in uniform.

But, not everyone sees this as a simple solution.

The non-profit group "Protect Minnesota" has lobbied lawmakers to adopt what it calls "sensible gun legislation while working to end gun violence."

Protect Minnesota Executive Director Heather Martens said the proposed legislation is "harebrained." Martens says there are too many loopholes that could possibly allow members of the National Guard to carry a concealed weapon who might not qualify to do so under current law such as those members who might have a domestic violence conviction, or any other conviction connected to violent crime.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS asked Gov. Dayton's office for a reaction to the proposed legislation, but have not yet received a response.

Expect Gov. Goofball to be awakened from his psychotic drug induced lullaby by his 'staff' in time to mumble "No guns for...for...for...I AM BATMAN!"

Dayton will find some lame excuse not to do so.

Remember the Dick Tracy cartoons?

Dayton could have voiced the character “Mumbles”.

Not sure about Minn.. but in the states I have lived in, most of the recruiting offices are shared with Army, Navy & Marines. So, if the NG shares a facility with them it wouldn’t work out. It will continue to be a victim zone. If we keep guns from military families, why can’t we keep guns from politician families? What makes them more special? DC Cartel, indeed.
