New York Dem Rep Proposes Bill Requiring Automakers To Install Breathalyzers In Cars
Daily Caller ^ | 7/23/15 | Kerry Picket

New York Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice announced recently she will drop legislation mandating American automakers to install ignition interlock technology in all new cars that detects a driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) and block the engine from starting if the driver’s BAC is above the legal limit.

“Advancing the progress we’ve made combating drunk driving demands bold action,” Rice said in a press release.

“It demands that we take a stand and say we refuse to keep letting drunk drivers take 10,000 lives each year. We refuse to keep seeing families torn apart when we know we can do more to prevent it. Strict enforcement is important, holding drunk drivers accountable is important, but we can and must do more to stop drunk drivers from ever hitting the road in the first place. That’s why I’m working on legislation to require ignition interlock devices in all new cars. This technology saves lives, it saves money, and I’m going to fight to make it standard equipment in American cars.”

Representative Rice previously served as District Attorney of Nassau County, NY, where she was known for aggressive drunk driving prosecutions and recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

We need mandatory drug and alcohol testing for ALL politicians before they vote on ANY legislation.

A friend saw a woman he knew had a Breathalyzer in her car drive up to a store, obviously drunk. He went over and asked her how she started the car. She bribed the little boy next door to blow in the thing.

If there was one in every car how long before somebody started selling a device to blow into the tube?

Why don’t they have a car that makes sure that you are legal to drive, as in legal America.....

I bought a breathalyzer, mostly for fun. Back in college we used to see how high we could blow and still play chess or ride a minibike.

But then I belong to D.A.M.M.-

So typical of NY State government - petty, stupid, arrogant and statist down to the tiniest detail of citizens’ lives.

More expensive crap to drive up the cost of a car. I don't drink. Why must I pay for expensive crap to deal with drunks? Make it an option. Wire the car for it. It only goes in after a DUI conviction under court order.

They do that now.

But the government thinks that if a current law isn’t working, they’ll fix that by passing MORE legislation that won’t work either.

Morons.....

I agree. A few years ago, I had to renew my license and take a written test. One of the questions read “After 1am, what percentage of drivers are legally drunk?” “I don’t care because none of them are me” wasn’t one of the four options, so I wrote it in.

The lady behind the counter wasn’t too pleased. I didn’t care because the question had nothing to do with my ability as a driver.

MADD has become another special-interest leftist outfit. They are no different than the homos, the envirowackos, or the militant blacks.

Same in West Virginia. My best friend, who I've been with since 4th grade, installs them in cars for the state of West Virginia and his takes ap ic of the driver and he/she blows into the device.

Democrat:
“Let’s keep jacking up the price of cars by requiring stupid feel-good overpriced equipment be installed so the little people can’t afford to buy the darn things and have to used our bike paths instead... at least until we jack up the price of owning a bike the same way we have cars...”

Since 13,000 die from HIV every year, maybe Congress needs to make chastity belts mandatory. (Or, since 10,000 die from malignant melanoma, mandate sun screen and outlaw beaches.)

Idiots! Stop messing with our cars! Adding unbearable costs on the masses for questionable reasons. Sometimes people use chemicals unrelated to alcoholic beverages; I can see potential false reads by the technology. There are consumer products that contain alcohol, such as germ-killing wipes, baby diaper products, hand-cleaner gels, not to mention cough drops and Day-Quil. Not everyone using these products is a drunk driver.

Install a device that checks for driver’s license and insurance.

Then we can get rid of under/uninsured motorist coverage.
