Donald Trump's Border Wall Would Cost Billions, Experts Say
NBC News ^ | July 23, 2015 | Elizabeth Chuck

Constructing an impassable wall along the U.S.-Mexico border would be a tall order — even for master real estate developer and 2016 GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"From a security standpoint, it really is not an intelligent solution," said Eric Olson, associate director of the Latin American program at the non-partisan Wilson Center.

In fact, "it's ludicrous," Olson said of the idea, which has become a hallmark of Trump's campaign.

Experts estimate that building and maintaining such a wall on the 1,954-mile border, which snakes along four huge states, would cost tens of billions of dollars. And the 21,000 border patrol agents currently on duty would be "nowhere near sufficient" to keep close surveillance on all of it, said Wayne Cornelius, director of University of California San Diego's Mexican migration field research program.

"Any kind of border barrier can be climbed over, and to prevent that type of activity, we would have to have not just drones in the sky, but a lot of boots on the ground," he said.

As of now, fences or other physical obstacles cover about one third of the border, areas that can be accessed easily by foot or by car, Cornelius said. Trump wants to wall in the entire border to keep out undocumented Mexican immigrants, who he has called "rapists" and "criminals."(continued)

So you plan on just giving the Rio Grande over to Mexico?

OK, good point. I'm pretty far away from the Rio Grande.

My great-uncle was promoted to captain for the Mexican Punitive Expedition in 1915. He always thought we needed a DMZ.

So, from El Paso to Brownsville, let's seize a ten mile deep strip on the South bank of the river, clear it of all life, and build the fence ten miles from the river.

Yep. I’m willing real Americans are very accepting of that cost.

Actually, you need only a few mines but a lot of signs (in several languages).

How about we just give out bounties for those turning in illegal aliens? At $500 a head, that would only cost about $15 billion for the entire 30 million illegals already here. For less than the same additional cost, we could deport them to the mother country.

If they return, it is 5 years in jail. If they do it a second time, it is 20 years in jail. I'll bet there would be very few in the latter category.

The Republicans pulled the funding to complete the border fence in 2007. Kay Bailey Hutchinson amended the spending bill.

Let’s see now...

Lowe’s reports that a chain link fence costs less than $20 per linear foot, installed.

There are 5280 feet per mile.

America’s southern border is about 1,900 miles long, so one continuous chain link fence at that border should cost about 200 million dollars.

Therefore, TWO parallel fences should cost about 400 million dollars.

If we add barbed wire “tops” and uncoil “razor wire” between the fences, the new total would be about 500 million dollars.

But, if we deduct the cost of EXISTING fences that NOW protect about a third of our border, the NEW total cost would be 350 million dollars.

Hmmm...?

How much does our government pay EACH YEAR for “studies” published by “experts”?

And, obviously, we have “shovel ready” workers that will make themselves available for...

? temporary relocation and moving expenses to build the fence (think CCC here).
? direct deposit to support the family left behind during the build.
? Located housing paid for by the gummint [think about the Panama Canal here].

Not really a burden on the US taxpayer, really.

My expectation is to round-up all the illegal immigrants and put them South of the fence. Even that (rendition) can be done at minimal expense.

“So, from El Paso to Brownsville, let’s seize a ten mile deep strip on the South bank of the river, clear it of all life, and build the fence ten miles from the river.”

We have 15 military installations in Texas, let them train on the border.

If you count backward, then:
1 million seconds = 12 days ago
1 billion seconds = 31 years ago
1 trillion seconds = 30,000 B.C.

If a person’s salary is $40,000 per year it would take:
25 years to earn $1 Million
25 Thousand years to earn $1 Billion,
25 Million years to earn $1 Trillion

If you lived to be 80 years of age, to have:
$1 Million you would have to save $34 each day of your life,
$1 Billion you would have to save $34,000 each day of your life,
$1 Trillion you would have to save $34 Million each day of your life

Were twenty trillion in debt. A couple of hundred billion on a fence is chump change.

And that’s how Trump would get it done. Unlike the “experts” who came up with that estimate, he has actually built stuff and knows true costs.

Let not the perfect be the enemy of the good. I think that could apply to our presidential candidate as well. We must support the man that will take us forward. He need not be perfect.

A wall is merely one component of the solution.

Phase One

Build the wall.

End catch and release, deport them immediately.

Phase Two
(can begin concurrently during phase one)

End all entitlement payments of any kind to all illegals.

Demand use of eVerify system by all employers.

Employers caught employing illegals will be fined and the company owners/managers will serve prison time.

All illegals currently serving criminal sentences are deported immediately.

All illegals caught committing a crime are deported as part of their sentence.

Children of illegal aliens, no matter where born, are ineligible for state and federal funds for public or private schools or college.

Illegal aliens and/or their children/family members are ineligible for Medicaid, Medicare or other publicly financed health care.

All non portable property (real estate) is confiscated by the government to pay for the deportation process.

In order to keep families intact, minor children will accompany their parents in deportation.

We have to end the free stuff and end the ability of illegals to work.
Hazletown, PA passed an ordinance several years ago that any resident had to be an American citizen or have proof of authority to be in the US (green card, student visa) to rent an apartment or house.
The illegals had cleared out in two weeks.
Unfortunately the SCOTUS called it unconstitutional and the illegals went back.

Everywhere something like this has been tried, it has worked.
Make a multi-prong “strategery” and the illegals will self deport by the tens of thousands.

It ain’t rocket science.
