Goose Creek resident Kelly Schuler said he was earning a six-figure income in corporate sales when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and after his symptoms became apparent and he lost his job, Social Security Disability Insurance payments became his financial lifeline.
Now he finds himself among the 11 million Americans who could see their monthly checks slashed by 19 percent next year, unless federal lawmakers address a looming shortfall in the Social Security fund that pays disability benefits.
The main Social Security fund that pays retiree and survivor benefits is not expected to run short for another two decades, the government said Wednesday, but the financial challenge facing the two Social Security funds is similar....

enjoy your health and income while you can- God forbid something happen to you and NOONE is there to help you when you can’t help yourself- Thank God this country isn’t made up of a majority of people who believe ‘hooray for me the hell with everyone else’ - Thank God that most people actually care about those who can’t help themselves- and thank God that those who have much are willing to have their taxes go to helping those incapable of helping themselves- Most people realize that it’s a moral duty to help those who can NOT help themselves- Most people are grateful for their own health and ability to work, and most people are just fine with paying into a system that is a safety net for themselves IF, God forbid, anything bad should happen to them- and if not, then others will be helped-

Basically, an individual must have paid Social Security taxes on his or her wages long enough to qualify for benefits. Generally, this means that claimants must have a fairly consistent work history, and have worked a minimum of five of the ten years previous to the onset of disability. The work credit requirement can be somewhat less for younger applicants, as parents’ work credits can be applied to applicants under the age of 22.

Actually that is an ignorant position to take because anyone can buy short and long term disability insurance that pays out far more than SSDI pays and it costs 1/10th less.
I can get both long and short term disability insurance that pays 60% of my wage and it is not taxed, meaning it pays what I take home anyway, for about $25 a month.
Social security pays $1,017 a month and costs 12.65% of all wages.
Someone making $100,000 a year pays $12,650 in social security that only pays $1,017 of they get disabled, yet, they can get $60,000 paid every year without taxes having to be paid for a mere $300 a year in case they get disabled. Liberals never could do math.
So, you can take care of yourself far better than SSDI can and you don’t need the rest of us to do it.

Where the4 heck are you finding a policy like that? $300 a year?
The thing with SSDI is that no one ever thinks they are going to need it, and another thing is that many people are born with disabling disabilities- or get injured or become sick before going to work- the whole deal with SS was to provide safety nets for people and to provide a pot of money for those who needed it- which I think many people are glad to do knowing that we have am oral obligation to take care of those who can’t take care of themselves- Not unlike our country stepping in to help other country’s who can’t take care o themselves when being attacked by more powerful nations etc- it’s just something we do-
The reason you can get that kind of disability insurance is because you are healthy, and the companies are gambling you will remain healthy and never need to collect on it- But I am willing to bet that someone who is ill isn’t going to be getting a policy for no $300 a year that pays what you claim it does-

Gee- how civil of you! And just for the record- a great many conservative believe in helping those who can’t help themselves- That is NOT a liberal ideology- Giving handouts to able bodied people who would rather sit on a porch all day smoking weed and drinking liquor is a liberal ideology!

Actually you do need the rest of ‘us’ for this to work- The whole premise rests on the fact that most people will not become disabled and therefore never collect- (SSDI is based on a similar model Many people die before collecting their entire SS amounts- that’s what makes it possible to help those in need- just like your private long term disability insurance or company LTDI) without many people In the system of LTDI, it could not thrive and would go bankrupt for lack of funds for those that do become disabled
In you example, you pay $300 per year- you work for 20 years, 30 or whatever, become disabled and collect $60,000 a year- $300x 20 years is only $6000 dollars Total that YOU paid into the system- let’s say you live another 30 years as a disabled person- you will be getting paid $1,800,000 in those 30 years- where does that money come from? Yup- that’s right- from OTHER people who have paid into the system- the money MUST come from them-

No, but there are many, many more options that can be executed quickly and the complexity of those options makes staying a step ahead of piracy feasible so for me it is an acceptable risk.

Instead of providing for the disabled separately or locally it was piggybacked onto SS

we’re trying to sell an old truck and we keep getting this call from a guy who drops the fact that he’s a “disabled vet” about three times in each conversation.....
start making people WORK the jobs they can....we have some people in wheelchairs,or with missing limbs trying to contribute to society and then we have the freeloaders...
I have all that stuff but I still work...
its our pathetic culture that rewards the sloths...
the casinos are full of them....people there night and day...not working...but throwing money around....
and I have relatives receiving it for years and years and years both driving sports cars and have other vehicles, and extra properties and living the life....
disability historically meant truly disabled...deadly disabled...like ALS or horrible cancer or CHF or severe COPD or paralyzed etc....it wasn't meant IMO for bad knees, anxiety, sore backs, fibromyalgia,depression, alcoholism, etc..
so sure...you vote to keep the gravy train going because you're situation is sweet.....
that's how our democracy was destroyed....people voting themselves the goodies and leaving the bills to the unfortunate...
we all acknowledge people that absolutely need to be on SSDI.....
If he doesn’t rate VA disability, he’s not a disabled vet in my opinion. Ask him what his VA disability rating is. If he hesitates, he’s not legit.
