Social Security Disability checks face 19 percent cut in 2016 unless solution found

Goose Creek resident Kelly Schuler said he was earning a six-figure income in corporate sales when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and after his symptoms became apparent and he lost his job, Social Security Disability Insurance payments became his financial lifeline.

Now he finds himself among the 11 million Americans who could see their monthly checks slashed by 19 percent next year, unless federal lawmakers address a looming shortfall in the Social Security fund that pays disability benefits.

The main Social Security fund that pays retiree and survivor benefits is not expected to run short for another two decades, the government said Wednesday, but the financial challenge facing the two Social Security funds is similar....

There are cases of faked PTSD, but there are plenty of people that really have it. Two of my friends have PTSD. Not debilitating, but slightly self destructive. Both went through difficult phases. Do they deserve compensation for it? I don’t know, but they need more help than a designated driver keeping them out of trouble.

SSDI is what funds the developmentally handicapped baby

*******************************************************************

That’s S.S.I., not S.S.D.I. People actually have to pay for S.S.D.I. in order to qualify for S.S.D.I. - must pay in for a minimum of 40 quarters.

They need to review those on disability and eliminate them. A lot of them are alcoholics, present or former drug users, slackers, and scammers looking for freebies. Only the truly deserving should be on there - and it sure isn’t 11 million people. I’d bet they could cut that number in half, easily. They should medically recertify everybody on the program every year in person, and change out the doctors who do the certifications.

These scare articles show up every few years.

They are BS.

Congress will vote the funds. After all, they just need the Treasury to turn on the money printers and sell the debt to China or Japan or Germany or some other nation. If that fails, they can get phony Monopoly money from Parker Bros.

This is a very enlightening thread, but I think we all know how this is going to go down.

The Pubbies are going to start shaking in their boots at the thought of the nightly drip....drip....drip of media stories about poor disabled suckers out there in South Succotash who are now eating dog food because their benefits were cut almost 20%. All due to those MEAN CRUEL EEEEEEEEVIL REPUBLICANS!!

I predict they’ll be running for the tall grass within the next 60 days. More cash into the black hole is a done-deal IMHO.

This is the result of giving a lot of people who got “depressed” or suddenly became unable to work due to health ailments they already had after extended unemployment SSDI.

Everybody seems to be on the government tit one way or another. Nobody is “working” for a living anymore unless they can’t qualify for the government tit. Just stop and notice what’s going on around you. I’m an “old guy”, so you might not agree with me.

Back in the early sixties, the roads were crowded before and after working hours with rush-rush traffic. But during working hours, not much was happening because most were at work “working”. During evenings and weekends, everyone was trying to catch up on shopping and other things they didn’t have time to do during the week because they were busy “working”. The work day was 8 hours long, plus or minus lunch and breaks and the boss kept an eye on you. To get a day off required an act of GOD or vacation/sick time.

I’ve noticed a change in the road traffic activity. Now it’s rush-rush traffic on the roads all the time. The roads are crowded with Walmart* attired shoppers driving brand new pristine SUVs and big chrome plated pickup trucks or HumVees. Everyone seems to be off for the day, everyday. Even the ones that work take off on lunch and breaks or keep Banker’s hours. Nobody seems to be going to or coming from work. Just driving around aimlessly on $2000 rims looking for a good deal. They got gas to burn and money to spend.

The bottom line is anybody really “working” anymore? No, they’re too busy driving around and spending the “free” government money. If you don’t believe me, check out Walmart* or one of the other big stores on “welfare days” and the 1st of the month. It’s like a buzzing beehive all day and into the night. After all the easy money is spent and towards the end of the month, the lines grow shorter.

Also, checkout the parking lot. Everybody is handicapped today. The parking lot is full of handicap tagged vehicles all vying for the dozen or so handicap spaces near the entrance. Screw the physically handicapped who really need the space. It’s for the 300# welfare mama’s who have high blood pressure and can’t walk more than twenty feet without huffing and puffing.

Once inside, ever try to find a “free” and working mobility scooter. No, that “full figured” twenty something lady and her screaming kids just got the last one. Grandma can wait. Meanwhile grandma can use one of those shopping carts with the bent “square” wheels like the rest of us.

If that doesn’t convince you, next time you’re in the check out line, take a look at all the shopping carts full of expensive food and other items. Then look at yours.

And I’m sure these folks are putting back some of that free money for a rainy day or their retirement. Houdini would be proud of their retirement plan.

My apologies to the people who really need and deserve assistance. But back then, most assistance came from our family, the church, and the generosity of our fellow man. That’s when everybody believed there was a righteous GOD, that we were not destined to one station in life, and that we could achieve the American Dream through hard work. People did not want charity, they wanted work. They wanted to help themselves. Now big socialist government has replaced those ideals with free money for all willing to participate in the scheme.

I’m sorry but I don’t have time to hang around and discuss the issue further, I’ve got to go to work. Have a nice day...

Getting rid of the fake disabled will improve the situation markedly.

Look at how many people were added to SS Disability since Obama took office. That tells you everything you need to know.

Okay... First, I don’t believe that most of the people receiving disability are scamming the system

Many are. When I owned rental properties up in WA, there was always an endless stream of prospective tenants on SSDI for everything from obesity to "attention deficit syndrome" and drug addiction.

Just a few months ago there were only 8 million on disability. Now there are 11 million.

Obama is using disability to remove people from the workforce and to buy votes.

“People actually have to pay for S.S.D.I. in order to qualify for S.S.D.I. - must pay in for a minimum of 40 quarters.”

Nope. That would suggest no one could get SSDI until the age of 28 or so. I know under 28 years olds that get disability. Also, since when does the law matter? Illegal aliens get disability.

[[Social Security Disability checks shouldn’t exist and neither should SSI.. ]]

Yeah because people with no arms and legs, deaf and blind should be able to blink their way to financial success

[[I’ve been collecting for around 8 years, but have yet to receive anything from SS to indicate they are reviewing my present condition.]]

Buckle down- it’s coming- people with true disabilities will be the ones required to undergo these checks while people who don’t need SSD will get lawyers, provided by the state, to prevent these checks!

How about reinstating and adding more SS investigators to flush out the enormous fraud, waste and abuse in this program???

[[In other news, welfare, food stamps and other government freebies are fully funded. ]]

It’s funny how our government finds all kind of money for ILLEGAL ALIENS (to the tune of more than 200 BILLION dollars a year) and for terrorist nations (how many billions of dollars go to terrorist natiosn every year?)
Yet they can’t find any money for our nation’s most vulnerable and needy people, seniors, vets and disabled people!

It’s funny how the government can find all kinds of money to forgive college debts, yet can’t find money to keep those who can’t work going- it’s funny how the government is screaming about how unfair it is that minimum wage is $10 an hour, and want to burden businesses by raising the wage to $15 p/h, yet the government turns a blind eye to the FACT that many people on disability and SS have to get by on just $10 PER DAY!

[[She has NEVER, ever paid in that much.]]

The whole idea of SS was for the healthy to pay in to take care of the needy in this country and to be available to them IF they should become needy as well- many people never become needy, Die before they become eligible for SS, and the money they pay in gets distributed to those in need- it’s supposed to be a safety net for those who can’t take care of themselves- Just like insurance that many pay into for years, and many never need, but those how do need it get way more than they ever paid in- same difference- it’s the healthy that pay in that make it possible for the sick to get the medical help they need when and if they need it- it’s a moral responsibility for the healthy to help provide for those who can’t- “To whom much is given, much is required”
