LOS ANGELES — Police investigating the death of a Los Angeles man uncovered an arsenal inside his home and garage — more than 1,200 guns and about two tons of ammunition, authorities said Monday.

Los Angeles Police Department Cmdr. Andrew Smith called the number of rifles, pistols and shotguns staggering. Many had never been fired and some were still wrapped in boxes, with price tags still attached.

"Our truck couldn't carry it all," Smith told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1HFAKVn). "We had to go back and make another trip."

“Detectives want to find out why he had so many guns and...”

Love the media too many “scary guns” narrative!

Some folks eat too much, some folks $hit too much, and some folks shoot too much (at paper).

Are large quantities of food, toilet paper, and guns now a crime?

Nah. A good average would be 700$ per, at 84K, and it does not take much to reach 2 tons of ammo. I guesstimate 150K.

The heirs had better work this out quickly. The last thing anyone wants is their guns sitting in a police warehouse where moisture is not a consideration.

That half million dollar collection could have its value cut in half in no time.

700 per is 840,000, not 84K.

No doubt about that. I remember seeing a pic of guns that were confiscated during Katrina. Thrown together into cardboard barrels, open tops, stuffed in a damp storage units. Rusted, broken and useless. Bastids!

A nice start.

Yes, for a small gun shop.

“Still no info on why he died. I guess they don’t consider that an important aspect of the story.”

Well, it certainly wasn’t because he was out-gunned or ran out of ammo.

Maybe he got the bill for his last 500 guns and a ton of ammo.

Never open your bills unless you’re in your easy chair with a stiff drink at hand.

True but if the police don’t impound them theives might relieve the heirs of anything to inherit.

It's highly likely in this case the "thieves" already have many of the guns. Two things cops love to lose accountability for is large amounts of cash, and guns.

The best of the lot will be lost on the way to the police station or while in storage there.

Happened to a personal acquaintance who inherited a gun collection from a relative who died in a different state.

In the northeast of course.

In CA all private transfers of firearms must go through an FFL, even to family members. So at the very least the family would have to come up with about 60K in transfer fees, or sell them through an FFL dealer, assuming that they were all legally purchased. I wouldn’t assume that though.

Right on, I-M.

Notice there is nothing in the article about any of them being illegal weapons as yet.

At least they’re aware of that, at least Cmdr Smith said that.

This should be quite an inheritance for his heir or heirs.

Is there a law against the ownership of guns? Not yet. The cops should return all this seized material to the family ASAP. If they don’t, they are fascists.
