I will tonight be posting a piece exclusively on Free Republic about McCain and the USS Forrestal fire. This will HOPEFULLY put to rest ALL of the BS that is posted here concerning this event.
The wild rumors that McCain started the fire by wet starting his jet have been debunked as far as I can tell.
A pretty good “read-ahead” Wiki Article:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_USS_Forrestal_fire
A tragic fire. We lost many good men that day.
How many jets did McCain lose in flight training and accidents?
“How many jets did McCain lose in flight training and accidents?”, that is another subject(s) for discussion McCain is in NO WAY Responsible for the CV-59 Fire.
I’m not one to pooh-pooh McCain’s career while in the military. I think his after service record is enough to completely condemn him as a madman.
However, if you’re going to get a majority of your facts from Wiki, maybe you should rethink that. There is always some truth and some meddling there on items that aren’t scientific, and articles can be subject to constant revision and rework by factions battling for reasons unknown.
When you do post, I’d like to see something that isn’t sourced from Wikipedia, frankly.
factcheck.org does a decent job....yes I know they a bunch of libs

Second that.
8 Years Flight and Hangar Deck(CV and Amphib)(ABH/Flight and Hangar Deck Fire Fighters) Experience and talking to(in my early years) very Senior People who were there(were YOU?). The referenced Wiki Article is extremely accurate.
So I will be the source.
For all the criticism of McCain's flying skills, he kept manning up. He avoided safer assignments that were offered. His motivations could be a mix of character traits that aren't desirable in either a naval officer or a president, but fear wasn't one of them. As far as getting preferential treatment, Naval Aviation is a fickle community sometimes. Some guys get hammered for their first screwup, others survive multiple screw ups only to screw up again. Despite there being a system in place to take care of that, there is variable of human judgement involved. In a much less tolerant system decades later I can think of a couple complete screw ups that kept flying and had no political connections. The one guy was pretty funny, because nobody got hurt. The second killed himself, his RIO and a number of people on the ground.
I voted for John McCain because I knew how bad the alternative was. If I was an Arizona voter I would vote for his opponent in a primary. I don't believe in his politics, but it doesn't bother me sharing the title of Naval Aviator with him. The same cannot be said for the convicted crook, drunkard, and liar, Duke Cunningham. A much more effective aviator, but a total A-hole.
I didn’t impugn your expertise, but I questioned you choice of Wiki to introduce your expose.
Regardless, neither me or YOU were there, were we? Because you talked with someone who was or wasn’t there didn’t put you there, the best term that can be put on that is extended here say.
I gave you some advice to make your presentation stronger, not to demean it. In your wisdom you chose to lash back out. I know what I need to know now. Good luck with your report.
Show me an instance in this thread where I criticized anything about McCain’s service.
I just don’t tend to give much credence to people who rely on Wikipedia, the information source of the people.
‘People’ tend to forget that half the people that have access to its ‘wealth’ of debatable knowledge voted for Obama. AFAIK, it is the resort of the those too lazy to go find the real sources.

The info that McCain started the fire is new to me the past few days. I never thought it and never believed it. I was in the Navy from ‘69 to ‘73 and part of our aviation training was the fire on the Forrestal. At the time we didn’t know who McCain was. We were told it was static electricity from the jet that caused the missile to fire. I believe that is the truth.
The other truth is that McCain shouldn’t have been a pilot on a flight deck. He would have washed out at Corpus Christi, his first training location, had it not been for his father.
His performance in the Senate has been abysmal. He has allowed other vets to suffer in the VA and has undercut conservatives on a regular basis.
THen there is this meeting of his a short time back.
He just referenced it as a read-ahead ....
And YOUR Flight Deck/Hangar Deck/Sea Service/Fire Fighting Experience is? Sometime you just need to STFU, sit back and LEARN from people who have “Been there, Done that” wore the T-Shirt out.
