The Super Bowl of Superholes ... Mark Steyn
Steyn Online ^ | 20 July 2015 | Mark Steyn

We are cursed, as the Chinese say, to live in "interesting times", about which there is much to say - the Iran deal, for example, or the Allaku Akbar guy running amok in Chattanooga. Yet the dead sloth that is the Republican Party has finally roused itself to spend the last 48 hours hammering Donald Trump for impugning the honor of John McCain.

As his criminal-immigrant surge demonstrates, Trump's support comes almost entirely from Americans who feel the political class passes its time talking about nothing that matters to them. So feel free to spend the weekend talking about John McCain. QED, as Trump is unlikely to say.

On the matter of McCain, in June 1998 the Senator stood up to address a Republican fundraising meeting: "You think that was a tasteless joke?" he began, referring to the previous speaker's closing Viagra gag. "Listen to this one." He then told the following side-splitter:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?

"Because her real father's Janet Reno."

Forty years ago, John McCain was a war hero. Since then he's mostly been an asshole. The problem is you can't out-asshole Donald Trump. McCain is in the Superbowl of assholery and hopelessly outmatched. He was doing assholery-as-usual last week, sneering at Trump's supporters as "the crazies". On recent polls that's getting on for 20 per cent of the Republican vote. If 20 per cent of Republican "crazies" take the same umbrage at McCain's sneer that Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham, Reince Preibus et al have taken on McCain's behalf at Trump's, then Hillary will be President with a Democratic Senate and maybe even House.

My God.....stunningly good!!!

And this:

They're only reinforcing Trump's critique: the GOP is a party of "losers" and "failures" obsessed with peripheral trivia nobody else cares about, while ignoring everything that's killing your future.

Tonight I had to be lectured to by the insufferable Geraldo Rivera and his blonde sidekick Dana Perino who proceeded to surf one towering tsunami of indignation after another, each more laughably preposterous than its predecessor until they arrived at the conclusion that Trump had insulted everyone who ever wore a uniform.

Not really.

He said something dumb but continues to say other things that the Republican base -- the people who actually watch the polls, man the phones, drive the minivans, contribute the money, and try tirelessly to convert their moronic neighbors to some semblance of sanity in a world gone completely mad -- regards as remarkable because the people who benefit from our largess not only won't say it but insist on badmouthing us as knuckle-draggers and racists every chance they get.

I'll happily add the mandatory disclaimer: I'm not a Trump guy. But he sure has made the correct enemies, hasn't he?

Indeed. It should be required reading. I’m not quite on the Trump bandwagon, but I understand. Pounding McCain has made the thought easier to stomach

Crazies indeed. McQueeg disgusts me.

Thank you
Thank you
Thank you Mark Steyn for saying it, and so brilliantly.
Senator McCain along with all of his outraged supporters may consider themselves released from the duty of representing this former Marine & all the veterans of my family. In fact, you pompous a-hole, stop trying to give away our country to undeserving criminals while our backs are turned fending off our OPEN enemies. We’ve got enough unemployed AMERICANS.
F’n jerk.

I had carefully read John McCain's account of his time as prisoner of the Vietnamese. I found myself slowly drifting toward disapprobation of Donald Trump. He had certainly suffered.

Mark Steyn completely wiped those thoughts right out of my mind. Unbelievable, such a nasty thoughtless statement from McCain.

And yet no Republican "leader" objected to McCain's characterization of the base [as "the crazies"].

Exactly--The GOPe loathes conservatives, except when its time to go to the polls.

Wonder how our Republican betters expect to win anything in 2016 when conservatives, who are heartily tired of being shat upon non-stop by what they believe to be their political party, decide to stay at home.

The media blackout of 1998 is in striking contrast to the wall-to-wall coverage of Trump's "gaffe". Two decades back, the media loved McCain because he was their kind of Republican: that's to say, he spent more time attacking other Republicans than he ever did Democrats. And they wanted him to keep on doing that, so they closed ranks around him. Whereas no one wants what Trump wants to talk about to be part of the 2016 election conversation, so anything must be seized on to disqualify him from participation. And, if nothing else is to hand, a sneer at John McCain will have to do.

Steyn couldn’t have nailed it better. One doesn’t normally think of the media supporting Republicans but yes they do….. particularly Fox News which supports ‘their kind of Republicans’. I am beginning to like Trump more and more…. I’ve watched his McCain comments numerous times and don’t actually see a problem there at all when viewed in their totality including context. On top of that, Trump appears to be going down a checklist of ticking off items that nobody in politics wants to talk about but are crucial to the nation, every RINO is now on notice that Trump will expose and ridicule them for who and what they are….. and he is just big enough, he doesn’t have to worry about pissing anyone off in the media, exposing them and for that matter, completely neutralizing them. I’m a Cruz fan all the way and while there will be some pain and problems, I see nothing but good coming from Trump bombing all these sacrosanct issues, phony RINOs and misguided and self-important media types.

I still believe Cruz is the ultimate beneficiary of this laughable situation.
