In a new push toward gun control, the Obama administration wants to bar certain individuals receiving Social Security benefits from owning firearms if they are deemed no longer able to handle their affairs.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the White House wants the Social Security Administration to weed out beneficiaries who cannot manage their affairs because of what federal gun laws label “marked subnormal intelligence, or mental illness, incompetency, condition, or disease” and then report those individuals to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).
Established in 1993, the background check system is used to prevent certain dangerous individuals — criminals, drug addicts, illegal immigrants, domestic abusers and others — from obtaining firearms.

There’s no pressing issue here other than making sure one more thing people acquire in their lives can’t be handed down to family members.
If they can stop SS from gun-owners they can stop welfare payments to druggies!

And by all the daily accounts we read here on FR, the bulk of those attacks are made by “Holder’s People.”
The thought of all those old geezers with loaded weapons and nothing to lose might leave some creases in the seat cushions of the chairs at those "death panels", too.
Originally it was a retirement account. The public never suspected the true intention: turn it into a way for the government to exert complete control over people.
Every government program is marketed as a benefit and the real plan is not revealed.

For Obama that’s all the “eloquence” required, perfectly expressed.
You might be onto something there. Maybe it’s an OSHA/job safety initiative for The Won’s kids, who keep falling prey to “workplace gun violence” while they’re just trying to improve their lives (with your stuff).
Shortly before that, another senior citizen decided to fire his gun at another much younger man, when he was annoyed at some kids in the neighborhood, not following “the rules” on a playground.
Those are just two semi-notorious cases, in my area.

If someone’s guardian is collecting disability benefits from Social Security due to another’s legally proven cognitive mental incompetency...I don't think it's a good idea to keep the CCW current, or an FFL for exotic weapons in effect.
Gun owners are not-so-much a Democrat constituency.
Welfare druggies are definitely a Democrat constituency.
Dems have to eliminate one to keep funding the other.
If I had to guess which one it would be.... Hmmmm.... Lemme think on this one....
This is only the first foray, a trial balloon, to use unaccountable agencies to implement gun control. He still has a year and a half to keep his promise.

But what if the recipient is a world traveller and has a family member looking after his or her finances? This isn’t just related to disability benefits as I read it. There are adequate laws to deal with mental competency as regards the ownership of firearms, this is simply another way to get the camel’s nose under the 2A tent.
