Federal Reserve blames immigrant kids for robbing jobs from 'native' U.S. teens
Washington Examiner ^ | July 16, 2015 | Paul Bedard

American teen employment has dropped 20 percent from the late 1980s, in part because more and more immigrants have flooded into the market to displace native-born kids from jobs in percentages far higher than on adults, according to the Federal Reserve.

"The displacement effect of immigration on the employment of younger persons is much larger than on the employment of prime-age adults," said the September 2014 report, "Labor Force Participation: Recent Developments and Future Prospects."

I feel sorry for the kids today, illegals and poor adults have just about wiped out jobs the kids used to do.

I think that's a big part of, not all, but significant. I also mowed lawns for a couple of summers and there was no adult competition, just other kids and most of us were around twelve or early teens. Then I moved on to make the big money catching chickens.

I never see a kid mowing laws these days, just adults who do it full time as best I can tell. Still some teens in supermarkets.

Typical socialist fixed pie ideology
.........
No, I think think this one is called supply and demand, and in this case the supply of labor significantly exceeds the demand due to immigration, legal and illegal.

*****

The socialists can make the same argument for any situation where supply and demand does not balance out the way they want. The economic problem here is socialist restriction of the demand for labor by actions that trash the private sector.

There are MANY legitimate reasons for restricting immigration — losing common language; added welfare costs; dangerous religions; socialist immigrants from Mexico; admission of law breakers; rising fixed land costs; and others. All I am saying is that we should not fall for socialist fixed-pie economics.

We need more Mike Rowe promoting skilled jobs that don’t require being buried in debt to learn solid trades.

My oldest son (17 at the time) tried a job picking berries at a farm owned by his friend's parents. The mexicans that the guy hired ran him out of the field on the inside of an hour, and put a rock through his windshield as a warning that gringos aren't welcome.

This was in the thumb area of Michigan, about seven years ago.

INS, ICE, and the sheriff's office wouldn't do squat.

The ONLY thing that would get their attention was to threaten to start making illegals “disappear”. That got their attention. Apparently, illegals and mexican nationals are a protected species, and enjoy more rights and privileges than actual Americans.

After moving out west, the situation is an order of magnitude worse than
back east.

Not sure what the reason is. Where I live, there are several adults who do full time lawn work. I see them often with their pickups and trailers loaded with lawn care equipment.
= = = = = = = = = = =
It is a cheap ‘cash’ business. All you need is a cheap trailer, lawn mower etc and be willing to WORK. Word of Mouth will get you going and when you become ‘in demand’ is when you can expand and grow your business.

The kids can thank ‘ELECTED OFFICIALS’ for the lack of work.
and most small businesses can’t afford the always rising minimum wage + what municipalities are throwing on top.

Should take about 6 months for the people who are living in the Maximum Minimum Wage ($15 or whatever) will start to realize that cup of coffee or 6 pack etc has been raised to accommodate the ‘minimum wage’.

Naturally the Pols never stop to think of the end - end results of their ‘good heartedness’.

BTW how many millions are the 4 Marines and 1 Sailor going to get from the FED because of the butthead in Tennessee?

They will be lucky to get wartime survivor benefits and I would imagine some would not want them buried in Arlington. (reserved for Combat Vets etc except for Cremation).

Of course to award Purple Hearts and give out all the Wartime Survivor Benefits would be to admit we are at ‘War’ right here on Home Soil.

I can only hope that BO is/was pulling a W and meeting/communicating with the survivors but he is far to egotistical and narcissistic to do any of that without wanting the ‘glory’ that goes with it.

With Brown, Trayvon, and the rest of the martyrs, he cares - I will even - sort of - go along with they were senseless killings BUT they were still THUGS before and during their assuming room temp.

If that clown that shot up the Church ‘for his cause’ would have went to any street corner and taken out a mob of drug sellers/users, he would have gotten the REAL publicity he was looking for. Even for the JJs and Sharptons of the world, it is hard to ‘butt in’ when the families tell you t go pitch your BS elsewhere....

Basically the ‘difference’ between Good and Bad people.

All I am saying is that we should not fall for socialist fixed-pie economics.

But in the US we have a problem of the supply of labor being increased through immigration well beyond what any growing pie scenario might absorb. Our government just puts most of the excess labor on means tested government poverty programs, gives us phony employmnent numbers, and then pretends everything is fine.

My current real problem is all our fast food outlets like Burger King, etc, speak broken English with a Mexican accent and I cannot understand. Who are these people and most seem school age. How do they succeed in school or is now Spanish the primary language in grade schools.

I suggested farm work to an idiot protesting for $15 per hour fast food workers and you would have thought I had suggested slavery.

It turned out that he didn’t want to work 50 or 60 hours per week and in fact didn’t want to work more than 20 hours per week because he wanted time to pursue “other interests” as he put it.

That's part of it, and I think that so many manufacturing jobs have been lost in many locales, that these adults now mowing lawns would have had manufacturing jobs twenty and more years ago.

Agree with your other remarks. Obama will have little to say about the Moslem jihadist who murdered the five servicemen in Chattonooga.

Anyone who has gone through a fast food drive through will see that in most cases the person handing them their food as an adult and not a teen.

ham and swiss hero from the local delli.

Man, that rang a bell with me. When I was 16 I worked on a farm in Massachusetts, mostly greenhouses, for $1.00 per hour. There was a barracks like building on the property which had housed Puerto Rican labor, but they had all gone back home. The Great Society had just kicked in and they were better off collecting welfare on their home island.

Anyway, in the summer for lunch me and my buddies would walk down to the deli for lunch. Ham & Cheese sub with the works and a can of coke - 65 cents. I felt guilty about squandering my hard earned dough...

But, what rankles me is the phrase, “they’re just doing the work that Americans won’t do”.

I have always said BS. Eliminate the ILLEGAL labor and most kids would jump at the opportunity to work - for money.

In the summers of 2013 and 2014 I had a great Caucasian couple who mowed and trimmed my very small yard and several others in our neighborhood for $35 every other week. Toward the end of last summer a Mexican crew came around and offered to do it for $20. I said no but several neighbors took them up on their offer. Then original couple finally said they were going to have to shut down their business because they weren’t even breaking even with their dwindling customer base.

Tried to find a replacement this spring that wasn’t all illegals but none to be had. Neighbors who did change crews last year now paying $40. Just no options in our area of Houston suburbs in crew make-up. Sad.

It is sad. Latinos are only 3-4% where I live so the adult lawn care people are white and black citizens. But still no kids mowing laws that I know of.

“Federal Reserve blames immigrant kids for robbing jobs from ‘native’ U.S. teens”

The Federal Reserve is putting a bum rap on immigrant kids. The blame should go determination of the political left to “fundamentally transform” this country. A major part of this agenda is a refusal of our majority party to control our borders. But why blame “undocumented Democrats”, who just want to improve their own lot.
