On Thursday, Barack Obama became the first sitting president to ever visit a federal prison. In anticipation of his arrival, the inmates of Oklahoma's El Reno prison hid not their feelings, even suggesting that divine intervention is at play.
"I am not gonna lie; I went up to my room and cried," one inmate said upon hearing of Obama's visit. "I feel that after twenty years in these prisons, the good Lord brought us Barack Obama to set things right."
He was speaking with Vice news who went along for the ride to video the historic occasion for an upcoming HBO special on the criminal justice system. But inmate Kenneth Choice's response takes the cake:
Obama once said that if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin. Well, there's a whole lotta peoples in here who look like Trayvon, his uncle, his daddy and all his relatives. We are your people Obama—we all look like Trayvon. I just hope you take after your hero Abraham Lincoln and free us like the slaves that the mandatory minimum laws have made us.
But it's not just non-violent drug offenders who are looking for more mercy, it's also first-time offenders, like Choice above, who want their own Obama commutations. And beyond that category, prisoners tagged as Armed Career Criminals want theirs, too. Vice reports:
Charles Scott knows that all too well. A first-time offender serving 51 and a half years for multiple gun crimes, he hopes President Obama will not just look at helping nonviolent offenders, but also at first-time criminals who were painted as murderers, terrorists, and career maniacs.....

Um, a jury of peers determined these men’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. They’re there for a reason.

That inmate that’s saying all the people that look alike in there is sure pulling at the heartstrings.
