UW Professor under fire for tweeting at incoming freshmen
The Milwaukee Journal ^ | 7-16-15 | Karen Herzog

An outspoken University of Wisconsin-Madison professor is under fire for finding future Badgers on Twitter and allegedly harassing them — as well as for comparing Scott Walker to Adolf Hitler.

Sara Goldrick-Rab is a professor of educational policy studies and sociology with a national profile in both her field of research and the ongoing debate over faculty tenure in Wisconsin public universities. ~snip~

Goldrick-Rab acknowledges that she searched Twitter for individuals who identified themselves as future Badgers. The prolific Twitter-user says she wanted to inform them of changes to faculty tenure and shared governance that were about to become part of state law — changes she says would hurt the quality of their education, but that the university wasn't telling them about.

While some of the future Badgers thanked her for passing along links to newspaper articles about the GOP-led changes to governing practices on UW campuses, a group who had just graduated from a Kenosha high school took exception. And one of them contacted the College Republicans of UW-Madison.

The College Republicans issued a statement on Facebook Wednesday — more than a month after the Twitter contact with Goldrick-Rab occurred — asking the university to address the tenured professor's "harassment of these future Badgers on Twitter who were doing nothing but showing their excitement for attending the university."

~snip~

It all started with a photo that a future Badger posted May 31 on Twitter of himself and his friends in their high school graduation caps and gowns, smiling and forming the Wisconsin "W" with their hands.

~snip~

Six days later, Goldrick-Rab reached out to all six students on Twitter: "I hate to bring bad news but," her tweet began. She then linked to an opinion piece ~snip~: "Threats to shared governance and tenure put mission of UW at risk."

Appropriate, isn’t it, that one of the whining professors from Madison would be named “Goldbrick:?

FReep mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.

“It isn’t the cuts. If this goes through, we are all leaving. No joke.”...

I hear there are good openings at the University of Havana,
and the People’s University of Bejing.

Besides removing the idiotic concept of tenure, Wisconsin should institute mental evals yearly for all professors.

Democrats and public unions have massive entitlement mentalities and see nothing wrong with this kind of behavior

"Future Badgers"?

People who collect and wear science fiction badges?

People who address their complaints to those who aren't yet born?

What Cub Scouts are called now that the BSA has changed?

Those just taking up some obscure perversion?

She would sort of resemble Hitler if she had a little mustache.

Liberalism is a mental disease, and apparently teaching in college can have a tendency to aggravate it.

What a loss. This country can't afford to lose sociology and educational policy professors.

(do I really need the tag?)

I’d ask what a “Hope Lab” is, but I’m afraid I might have a stroke if I find out.

Doing away with tenure will improve the quality of university instruction.
