Atlanta NAACP chapter calls for removal of massive Confederate sculpture in public park

A sculpture in Georgia larger than a football field – depicting Civil War luminaries Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson – has become the latest target in the push to purge the South of signs of the Confederacy.

The Atlanta chapter of the NAACP called Monday for the elimination of all symbols of the Confederacy from Stone Mountain Park, whose marquee attraction is the 90-foot-high, 190-foot-wide sculpture carved deep into the mountain.

"Those guys need to go,” chapter leader Richard Rose told WSB-TV, referring to Davis, the former president of the Confederate States of America, and the two Confederate generals. “They can be sand-blasted off, or somebody could carefully remove a slab of that and auction it off to the highest bidder.

"My tax dollars should not be used to commemorate slavery,” he added.

In addition to the removal of Confederate symbols from Stone Mountain Park, located outside of Atlanta, the group says it also wants all symbols removed from state-owned buildings, parks and lands.

A spokesman for the park told WSB-TV that any removal of the monuments is up to the Georgia state legislature.

Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., who serves the district in which the mountain sits, told local radio station V-103 that he is “not so much affected by Stone Mountain Park as I am by the flag flying at an official government building like a state capitol or even the federal Capitol, a position, the seat of government.”

“I view Stone Mountain as more of a museum-type archaeological place of remembrance for those who want to remember back then and they have a right to remember back then and the park is there,” he said.

And the slaves?

Would have been freed within 20 years due to technological advances in agriculture.. Realize there still would have been European trade peer pressures to discontinue the practice, no matter what the outcome was of the war.

RE:The Confederates were Anti-American traitors.

Not all Confederates were Anti-American traitors. Many of them were fighting to prevent their homeland from being occupied by what they perceive to be aggressors from the North.

RE: The flag represents treason.

Not to those who hold it as a heritage of the Southern way of life. I would say that millions of Southerners are loyal to the United States of America who will fight to the death to defend the union today.

Many of those who value the Confederate flag in fact were VETERANS of the war to DEFEND the USA.

RE: That’s why government should NOT fly the flag or have confederate monuments on any public or government property.

Again, I see no reason why flying it on public property harms anyone.

You can fly BOTH the Stars and Stripes AND the Confederate flag side by side as a sign of BOTH love for your country AND respect for the heritage of the South.

The Confederate flag has flown in the South for nearly 150 years without in any way affecting this country, nor has it prevented the Southerners from being patriotic to this country. Heck, I would argue that a huge number of those who value the confederate flag would gladly give their life for the United States of America.

By taking it down, you only give credence to what ONE SINGLE evil nut job did and only encourage the next nut job to do something similar.

You seem to forget what the Confederate crap represents to African-Americans and other minorities.

Because blacks and other minorities are jealous or ignorant of US history means I should be also? What a punk you are. KMA you POS.

Except that the con-feds wrote the Peculiar Institution into their constitution for all time. The slavoceracy wanted their free labor and - as proven by the war they started - wouldn't take no for an answer.

Would have been freed within 20 years due to technological advances in agriculture..

An easy claim to make with no basis in fact.

Realize there still would have been European trade peer pressures to discontinue the practice, no matter what the outcome was of the war.

In the first place, would there have been? There was no European pressure placed on the South before the Civil War. And there was no outside pressure placed on Brazil when they continued slavery for over 20 years after the war. Why would an independent Confederate States be subject to any? In the second place, why would the South care if they did? The were willing to fight a bloody war in order to break away and keep their slaves. You really think they would have caved to some social pressure from the pulpits or editorial pages of Europe after having done that?

Confederate flags or monuments have no business being in any publicly funded place or government building.

I disagree.

That is not the point. The point is that we have the right to honor our ancestors via the Battle flag and monuments. This is part of our culture and NO ONE has the right to take that away.

You mean towards slavery? Why shouldn't we think that?

So you think it would be OK for public places and government buildings to fly the Nazi flag and have Nazi monuments?? Because that’s pretty much the same thing you know.

Congratulations! Many on FR have tried to compress that much stupidity into so few words, but few have succeeded like you have. It's like a Haiku of your rank ignorance. Well done.

There are no heritage supporting Freepers calling for the reforming of the Confederacy

You are incorrect.

Lets note forget that the Black codes, prison lease system, and Jim Crow laws instuted by Democrats continued the vestages of slavery and racism for 100 years after the Civil war and all had to be stamped out by REPUBLICANS like a brush fire.

The South was dragged kicking an screaming into abolition....for a very long time.

I think that removal of civil war monuments and grave site desecrations are treasonous acts of moral cowardace.

But my support for Historical monuments and freedom of expression in flying the North Virginia battle flag DOES NOT equate to support for The confederacy.

Hey Tom....that’s not for YOU to decide...those issues were settled by the men who fought each other in that war and you have NO RIGHT to second guess them through 150 years of hindsite.

The veterans of the Civil war made their peace and amends and you sir can butt out of their decisions and actions.

What’s next? How about close the Holocaust museum because of the pictures and references to Nazi’s?

A point that doesn’t make much sense to me. The South launched a war to preserve slavery.

Were they/are we not all Americans? Had the South prevailed how would world history have been affected? Would there have been a First World War and would a Balkanized America stayed out of it or would some states supported one side or the other? The Confederacy itself at the time was a tenuous entity at best. And would there have been a Second World War and an Adolph Hitler? Again, how would a fractured have dealt with Nazism?

Elaborate if you would on just how different America would look. To me we’d be a Balkanized nation and certainly not the worlds super power.
