A federal judge has ordered the Patent and Trademark Office to cancel registration of the Washington Redskins' trademark, ruling that the team name may be disparaging to Native Americans.

The ruling Wednesday by Judge Gerald Bruce Lee affirms an earlier finding by an administrative appeal board.

What is a Virginia Battle Flag?

The only one I know of the the Culpeper Minutemen flag.

Sadly the Indians removed that logo from their caps this year and instead have a rather boring letter C instead.

I find the word “judge” to be disparaging.

Long overdue and, seriously, I doubt anyone could be surprised at the outcome. As a former and longtime DC area resident, my only surprise is that it took so long to occur. But, heck, maybe with a new name they can finally start winning some games.

The judge is a totalitarian and unfit to hold office.

I should have clarified Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (IE the “confederate” flag).

It can get confusing.

Interestingly, the “Battle Flag” was originally square in its dimensions (like the one flying, at least for now, at the SC state house).

The “normally dimensioned” (+/- 5:3 length to height ratio) Flag of the same basic design served primarily as the Confederate Naval Jack.

To confuse things still further, while the square Battle Flag was designed and first used by the Army of Northern Virginia, it was subsequently used as a battle flag by other commanders throughout the Confederacy.

And, with all that said, I doubt there was perfect consistency in the use of the two ‘designs’ during the War.

One thing we know for sure is that the flag in question is NOT the “Stars and Bars”, no matter how often media sources incorrectly call it that.

Tell the judge to stick it. Keep the name and just alter the logo a little bit:

The judge’s opinion says (correctly) that the organization is free to continue to use the mark, as is. The article includes that information.

Hey, I read the article. Lighten up a little. Maybe it wasn’t clear from my two comedic, graphic posts. I posted both of them in humor, tongue-in-cheek. I wasn’t being serious.

No insult intended, and believe it or not, I didn’t see the images. I use a text-only browser (can see images if I click on them). Should have assumed you were just making fun, but you can see from the thread that many people have a mistaken perception of the ramifications of losing trademark registration, and I jumped to the conclusion that you thought the Redskins couldn’t use the mark.
