Former Gov. Jim Gilmore said in a telephone interview today that he plans to announce in the first week of August that he is running for president.
Gilmore, 65, Virginia's governor from 1998 to 2002, said he does not think any other Republican candidates have addressed what he considers the vital national security and economic concerns facing the nation.
"I bring to the table experience that others don't have," said Gilmore.
A former U.S. Army intelligence officer, he later headed the Gilmore Commission, a congressional panel that advised Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush on domestic capabilities for terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction.
Gilmore briefly sought the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, but dropped out citing a lack of funding.
He is now president and CEO of the Free Congress Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank.
Govs. Scott Walker of Wisconsin and John Kasich of Ohio are expected to enter the GOP contest this month. After their entry Gilmore would be the 17th prominent Republican in the field.

I think we should ALL run for president ....everybody else is.
OK....this does it.....I am going to run for President and so is my dog......oh....I don’t have a dog.
Who? With due respect to a former Gov., who dug him up?
We have over a Baker’s Dozen as it is.
Former Gov. Jim Gilmore?
Who?
Happy would get more support.
Do these people get to keep the money or are the all nuts?
Who?
I believe most of these guys must be angling for a talk show gig or possibly some job in someone’s administration.
Well I guess that’s the only thing left. Truml for prez, Oprah for VP...maybe this guy for DefenseSctry.
“Happy would get more support.”
I think he’s counting on the name confusion to boost him from .1% to .2%.
“Do these people get to keep the money or are the all nuts?”
I’m pretty sure they get to keep leftover money, if there is any. They are still nuts.
I’m gonna make up t-shirts for sale on the internet. They say:
I’m running for the GOP nomination for president.
I can’t be worse than the one we have now.
Right now, Gary would probably get more support.
He seemed like a nice guy and managed not to get indicted, but he's got even less chance than Pataki (another blast from the past).
Nah.

Oh. A Hockey player....that would be welcome.
If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve. There, I thought I’d make it official.
Save your time and other people’s money, Gov.
Nobody wants you to be President.
I’d vote for your imaginary dog ahead of jeb
