Obama administration likely to block new Redskins stadium

The Obama administration will likely block Washington, D.C., authorities from building a new stadium for the NFL's Washington Redskins because of objections to the team’s name.

The National Park Service (NPS) owns the land under the 54-year-old Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium, a venue two miles east of the Capitol that hosted the Redskins from 1961 to 1996. Some city leaders want to demolish the current stadium and build a new one to lure the football team back from suburban Maryland.

But Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose department includes the NPS, told D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser in April that, unless the Redskins change their name, the Obama administration would not work to accommodate construction of a new venue, according to The Washington Post. In a letter a month later, a local NPS official told Bowser the agency opposed the idea of building a new stadium.

“As I believe the Secretary made clear in our discussion, the NPS will not take a position in support of such an extension at this time,” Robert A. Vogel, a regional NPS director, wrote in the letter obtained by the Post.

Vogel told Bowser she and her staff are nonetheless free to pursue legislation that would authorize the construction.

Jewell, who also oversees the agency responsible for federal relations with American Indian tribes, has criticized the Redskins name as a relic of the past, an opinion President Obama shares.

“Personally, I think we would never consider naming a team the ‘Blackskins’ or the ‘Brownskins’ or the ‘Whiteskins,’ ” Jewell said last year.

“So, personally, I find it surprising that in this day and age, the name is not different,” she continued.

Obama has also said he would change the name if he could.

I’m hazy on the language in the Constitution that grants the executive branch power of football stadiums. I’ll have to look more closely at the penumbra.

DC needs the Redskins way more than the Redskins need DC.

The Feds actually do run DC. It is not a state.

Here is the thing, however. That a$$ hat in the white hut is from Chicago. The only thing he and I have in common, is that we are both Blackhawks fans, as they won their third Stanley Cup in 6 years. 😆😃😀😎 It is ironic, that he has never suggested that the Blackhawks change their name. I don't want them to, I am just wondering why the Obungler has not mentioned that, but wants the Redskins to change theirs? A bit of liberal hypocrocy?

I live within walking distance of RFK. It was a shock when the Redskins scuttled to the 'burbs, but now that they're gone, there are much better uses for that site. RFK is adjoined by extensive parking lots and the DC United practice fields. These sweep all the way to Benning Road, across which lies Langston Golf Course, which in turn abuts the National Arboretum and the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens across the river. (A pedestrian/biking bridge is planned.) And all this is riverfront property.

The Anacostia corridor has the potential to be an extraordinary park/playground stretching through a rapidly rejuvenating part of the city. My preference would be to turn the RFK tract and associated parking lots into a youth sports complex. I don't know how many multi-purpose soccer/lacrosse/football fields it could accommodate, but I'll guess 20 or more. (Think of the Germantown soccerplex if you know the area.) Then add accommodations for kayaking, canoeing, and crew along the river, and tie in the bike paths which will soon push all the way upriver and connect to an extensive network beyond Bladensburg and College Park ... and you have a remarkable sports and recreation asset for the east side.

This is just one of the ideas being bandied about. Fingers crossed.

What does banishing the Confederate flag and changing the name of the Washington Redskins have in common?

Sally is no JEWELL. She is more like a poorly cut piece of glass, not even Diamonique quality.

Have you noticed that nearly every Obama female appointee is a total incompetent and leftist PC ahole? There are one or two exceptions but if you look over the Obie Regime’s female leaders during the past 6 years, you will find total failures from DSH, HHS, SecyofState, Navy leaders, Veterans Affairs, IRS, etc.

I like competent women, no matter what party they belong too, but what I’m seeing with Obama’s choices are total failures.

And just look at the political leadership of Baltimore. Need I say more? DC isn’t much better nor is the leader of the NY City Council. And the list goes on, and on, and on.

Maybe he's got some of those barriers he used when he shut down the National Monuments and Parks.

I'm guessing LA would love to have em, new stadium included.

It'd be a shame to add that to Obama's "legacy."

Have you ever seen an administration that wastes so much time on the wrong $hit? I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at all when everything is handled by Butler Jarrett and the most important important issue for the CiC is which which putter to buy or which links to play on. Forget protecting our borders or repelling foreign enemies. I guess that’s too just difficult and would result in less foreign donations anyway.../s

Amazing the number of government bureaucrats who openly declare their personal views and confirm their decisions are made strictly and capriciously on that basis.

These people also seem oblivious to the fact that Jan 2017 is soon approaching and this particular crop of PC hacks will be out of power. The NFL and the Redskins will be around much longer.
