SONGS OF THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

This song was Anglo-American, dating from the Seven Years War, called the French and Indian War on our side of the Atlantic. It was an American favorite, both with its original lyrics and others adapted to the tune.

”Yankee Doodle”

Francis Hopkinson designed the first American flag for Betsy Ross to sew. The tune is “Yankee Doodle,” and Hopkinson had an enjoyable time twitting the British on how their officers lacked the energy to get out of their mistresses’ beds to fight. History books often quote this classic line, which was left out of this recording:

Sir William, he, snug as a flea,
Lay all this time a snoring;
Nor dreamed of harm, as he lay warm,
In bed with Mrs. Loring.

Lieutenant Joshua Loring was a British quartermaster whose attractive wife caught General William Howe’s eye – and another part of his body. They swived into the wee hours, and Loring had no problem as long as his cushy assignment at the supply depot continued. In Vietnam, people like Loring were known as REMF’s. The RE stood for rear echelon, and I’ll leave the MF to your imagination.

”Battle of the Kegs”

As Ben Franklin said in “1776,” “They’ll clean it up for the history books.”

Ben Franklin is the one Founding Father you could pull out of a time machine and he’d have the modern world figured out in half a hour.

On the strange QWERTY configuration of our keyboards: “I’ll bet it was the solution to an engineering problem of some sort, and it stuck over time.”

On electricity: “You generated lightning with magnets instead of bottling it? Why didn’t I think of that?! At least it was an American who made it practical.”

On being on the $100 bill: “I‘m worth 100 of Washington, 50 of Jefferson and 10 of Hamilton? His Excellency, Thomas and Alec will be green with envy when I tell them!”

On the Internet: “You mean I can display my copy on a – (hesitates to find the words) – desktop, laptop or I-Pad, without the use of printing presses, printer’s devils and lazy apprentices of which I was once one? Good sir, please tell me where I may enroll in a web design class! (Looking around carefully.) And what is this Viagra I’ve been hearing about? Is it true?”

A month later, Ben has his website up and running. It’s called “Poor Richard’s Tattler,” and it competes with Drudge for the juiciest, most salacious gossip in Washington. It’s the “Tattler” that breaks the John Edwards story, not the “National Enquirer.” There is a pay-for-view section called “Ben 24/7" that has updated versions of such classic essays as “On the Wisdom on Taking an Older Woman as a Mistress,” and special high-value items such as “Rielle Hunter’s Sex Tips: How I Made John Edwards Happy.”

A few weeks later, Ben is driving around town in a convertible with a 25 year old super-model at his side, and he has this big old grin on his face.

SONGS OF THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE

William Billings was born in Boston in 1746. He is celebrated as the earliest native writer of music in America, and his works were popular with the colonists. New England soldiers who were stationed in the South knew many of his tunes by heart and amused themselves by singing them in camp to the delight of all. In another 85 years their presence in the South would not be welcome, but that’s the story of another war.
