McConnell Doubts Senate Will Confirm Ambassador to Cuba(What a strong statement from a true leader)

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday that his chamber is unlikely to approve an American ambassador to Cuba, dishing out a quick rebuff to President Barack Obama and his drive to normalize relations with the U.S. neighbor and longtime Cold War foe.

The Kentucky Republican also suggested that the GOP — which controls Congress — would fight Obama administration efforts to fully lift trade and travel restrictions that have limited American commerce and tourism with the communist-led island nation. McConnell said the country was led by "a thuggish regime."

The comments by McConnell came a day after Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced that the two nations will open embassies in Havana and Washington July 20 and resume diplomatic relations severed in 1961, the year Obama was born.

McConnell's remarks underscored that despite a push to ease the curbs by U.S. business and agriculture interests and some GOP lawmakers, Republican leaders remain sympathetic to the party's more conservative, anti-Castro voices. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and several contenders for the GOP's 2016 presidential nomination criticized Obama's moves shortly after they were announced Wednesday.

"You would think that the normalization of relations with Cuba would be accompanied by some modification of their behavior," McConnell said Thursday at Commerce Lexington, the chamber of commerce for Lexington, Kentucky. Instead, he called the country "a police state" and "a haven for criminals" wanted in the U.S.

"I don't see any evidence at all that

If Ted Cruz was running the Senate it would be ' there is no way that an ambassador to Cuba would ever be confirmed as long as I am in the Senate and still breathing'

Ole Scrotum Neck used that word “unlikely.” That’s because when he caves, no one can call him a liar.

Mitch will get a phone call from Obama and whatever pointy-headed academic socialist he wants will get rushed through in record time. Rubio and Portman will have a fight over who gets to cast the winning vote.l

McConnell and McCain will take NO time from
having the IRS attack the TEA Party (and its coverup)
for this kabuki dance. Their sole goal
is empowering ISIS, Obama, and Tyranny.

What McConnell is saying is he wants some deal that will benefit
him and his corporate donors before he allows a vote.

How about 1% of the casino franchise, Mitch?

That said, the Senate can bottle up whatever it wants to. The Frist-lead Senate bottled up half a dozen or so Bush nominations for judgeships, to the point that after a couple years and several renominations, the nominations were abandoned by Bush. That subterfuge was undertaken to appease the DEMs.

If Obama and the press make the right noises, McConnell will capitulate.

It’s not about noises, it’s about back room deals.

The thing is, the Senate will have to stay IN SESSION, at least pro forma session, in order to keep the fascist at bay.

Let’s see if Mitch is willing to do that all summer.

My guess is no.

-- It's not about noises, it's about back room deals. --

Those two aren't mutually exclusive; and either one alone is sufficient. Government shutdowns are averted by noises. Every time Congress delays cooking the books, the DEMs pitch a fit in the press, and the GOP caves in. Same sort of pressure can be brought to bear on normalizing relations with Cuba. See too, pull out of (and get in to) Viet Nam, Iraq, etc.

I don't doubt that the Cuba deal will be made with back room deals, that's the 1% of casino take to Mitch reference.

Apparently, the man who wants to be the next president said less than one year ago that Mitch McConnell should be "speaker". As if there were a "speaker" in the senate.

I think the average 8th grader knows better.

No return of cop killer Joanne Chesimard (calls herself Assata Shakur now) then NO: 1) normalization of relations; 2) lifting of the embargo; 3) further liberalization of travel restrictions.
