I just do not see the oil industry, as we know it, continuing much beyond a decade or so.

The increase in environmental protection measures launched by the Obama administration will certainly expand, and likely expand rapidly, after Hillary is elected. (Note: the GOPe’s incompetence is making Hillary’s victory a near certainty).

Also, the oil industry is increasingly exposed to litigation risk related to climate change. Settlements against the oil industry will dwarf those against the tobacco industry settled in the 1990’s. There will be plenty of veterans of that legal action in the Hillary Clinton administration. The oil industry simply has too much money lying around for the environmental movement and the environmental legal community to leave alone. The oil industry will likely need to reach some sort of accommodation with the government like the health insurance companies - increased cooperation and oversight, increased environmental protection measures, and some sort of huge structured financial settlement.

Tuesday, by ruling that wildlife protections bar the company from simultaneously boring two wells into the Chukchi Sea this summer.

The Russians must want to drill there.
