For most of history people have had two periods of sleep each night, with the time in between being perhaps the most calm and relaxing part of their lives. Then came the lightbulb. This unexpected "two sleep" phenomenon was uncovered by historian Roger Ekirch when he began to do research for a history of the night:

There are other things you can do that makes the second period of sleep more restful.

while hubby sleeps

"Oh, did the baby sleep all night?"

"No, I fed him three times, did two loads of wash, and watched half of South Pacific. So glad you slept well, though."

I did this all last winter. Would read for an hour and fall back to sleep. It was nice and I always had a total of 7 to 9 hours of good sleep. I am less anxious and more cheerful.

WE USED TO SLEEP TWICE EACH NIGHT!

I’m going to guess this was a valuable phenomenon in ancient days. SOMEBODY in the village would likely be naturally up and alert at any time of the night.

Check out article.

Thanks, anonymous. Interesting article.

I know all the songs from South Pacific. It was on Turner Classic Movies every night for two weeks when Tom was a baby (1996). Sometimes I had babies who didn't spew, and then I wouldn't even get up, just roll them over ... but it was wonderful when we got a DVD player instead of trying find something on TV in the dead of night.

I'm the husband and would get up once in awhile for our first-born, but not too often. When we had twins I was up every time as well with a bottle. But my wife definitely bore the brunt of that whole ordeal.

At the cabin/shack though it is me that tosses another log in the pot-belly stove.

Sometimes I fall back asleep right afterward, too. They don’t tell you about the ring you get on yer butt from the terlit seat when they’re touting this kind of therapy, now do they?

I love the music in South Pacific! What a voice Rosano Brazzi had!

I must confess, however, that the movie creeps me out a little with Bloody Mary trying to pimp out her daughter.

It gives you the chance to check the area for threats, too.

Yes, that part is creepy ... but probably realistic. Men could basically go shopping for teenaged Asian girls.

I make up for that change by sleeping twice during the day. Minimum.

This unexpected "two sleep" phenomenon...

Unexpected?

Any one heating with wood in an open fireplace can explain it to you. You get up to feed the fire in the middle of the night. It takes some time and attention to get the fire burning properly.

As one who has used a CPAP for four years now, I have to say it was worth the initial discomfort. I used to get horrible sore throats from snoring. Now I fall asleep within minutes most nights and I’m awake and ready to go by six most days. The cost of the equipment is a real racket but my insurance covers most of it.

From the article:

they waited until after the first sleep, when their energy was replenished, to make love. Their wives liked it more, too, he said. The first sleep let men 'do it better' and women 'have more enjoyment.' ...

..

Well, I'm convinced it's a good idea.
