Should Pregnant Women Who Smoke Be Fined for Endangering Their Children?
Pajamas Media ^ | 03/24/2015 | by Michael van der Galien

Know someone who’s smoking while pregnant? They need to see this video made by Dr. Nadja Reissland, of Durham University. In it she shows that unborn babies of mothers who smoke may have delayed development of their central nervous systems.

Many people believe that abortion should be illegal — at least after a certain period — because it means killing an innocent life. Well, how about physically abusing one? Shouldn’t that be illegal, too? After all, you aren’t allowed to beat your born child until she has brain damage either. How’s this any different?

Sure. Why not? What’s a little personal freedom where the rights of the unborn are concerned?

And leftist nanny-staters are ALL ABOUT the rights of the unborn, right?

Right?

No. This is not the business of the government.

RE: No. This is not the business of the government.

So, it isn’t the business of government if a parent endangers or abuses his/her child?

Except when their child is born with a birth defect and the parents can’t afford to pay for the care and the government (us taxpayers) has to step in and pick up the tab.

Let me get this straight — you are outright kill the baby, but can’t smoke?

I hate smokers in general for their stupidity, but in this case I cannot support the hypocrisy.

Should Judges be fined and indicted for violating
the US Constitution, first?

How about everyone mind their own business?

Just imagine how peaceful things could be.

People need to quit thinking up laws and fines for just about everything.

That’s the standard line of reasoning of all totalitarians.

RE: I hate smokers in general for their stupidity, but in this case I cannot support the hypocrisy.

The most basic question is this — does freedom include the liberty to be stupid?

I’ve spoken to liberals and many have told me that their answer is “yes” ( you should be free to do stupid stuff as long as you victimize only yourself ).

However, this is now even more complicated because GOVERNMENT is involved in our healthcare.

It is no secret that a huge chunk of our health problems ( which government via the tax payers pays for ) are SMOKING RELATED. This COSTS the healthcare system a lot of money.

So, if you are depended on government for healthcare, of course they will be involved in your personal health ( i.e. what you eat, whether you exercise or not, and of course, PREVENTING you from smoking ).

the mother should be charged with a crime so the CPS can force an abortion in order to take custody of the fetus.

Per the Hildahag's book; It Takes a Village Idiot

Simply a fine for killing?

Looks like a baby’s life is worth less than a child.

Seems like a legitimate concern. The Child is certainly injured by such indulgence.

How about mothers who use meth or heroin or cocaine? Funny, they only go after people who use legal substances. I believe since she avoided even talking about mothers who use powerful illegal drugs that can be harmful to their unborn children, that this is really about getting to the people who are basically law abiding. They want to encroach on rights of Americans who are not breaking the laws but they will not touch people who are actually breaking the law and using far more dangerous substances.

It seems that the two whipping boys today are smokers and white Southerners. It is always safe for the left to beat up on those two. And see how hypocritical they are
