Netflix has this movie on DVD. I haven’t received it yet, but yesterday chajin suggested it is a rush job so I am not expecting much. Bosley Crowther encourages the low expectation.

One thing I neglected to point out yesterday is that all the Japanese roles are played by Caucasians--they didn't even use the standard Chinese-Americans (Philip Ahn, Benson Fong, Richard Loo, Joseph Kim--OK, he was Korean-American :> ) that tended to populate the Japanese military characters in WWII propaganda movies. Perhaps the Asian-American standards were too busy working for Edward Dymytryk making Back to Bataan with John Wayne and a very young Anthony Quinn.

Good grief, according to that news blurb, Paramount was originally planning on having Alan Ladd and Betty Hutton co-star in “California.” That sounds like it would have been a horrifically discordant teaming... the low-key Ladd and the wacky, hyperkinectic Hutton, in what is a supposed to be a serious western drama. Eventually the film was of course made, starring Ray Milland and Barbara Stanwyck.

Just saw Dial M for Murder again last weekend. Ray Milland was terrific in it (well, terrifically bad).

Your posts make me realize just how many movies were being made in the pre-television era. I love old movies from the Golden Age, but there are a lot in these posts I never heard of.
