Charlie Daniels on the Confederate Flag, Restraint and Common Sense
CNS News.com ^ | June 26,2015 | By Charlie Daniels

This will have the potential to be lengthy, so bear with me and I will try my best to relate my honest feelings on the Confederate flag in question, which was actually the battle flag carried by several Confederate army regiments – and was not the official flag of the Confederacy.

I was born in 1936, a mere 71 years after the Civil War ended, when the South was looked upon by what seemed to be a majority of the Northern States as an inbred, backward, uneducated, slow-talking and slower-thinking people, with low morals and a propensity for incest.

This was in the days before television, and about all the folks up North knew about Southerners was what they heard. There were a lot of people who took great pleasure in proliferating the myth, and some still do it to this day.

As you might suppose, people in the South bitterly resented this attitude of superiority, and in some quarters the words “damn” and “Yankee” became one word. And a somewhat fierce type of Southern pride came into being.

The Confederate battle flag was a sign of defiance, a sign of pride, a declaration of a geographical area that you were proud to be from.

That’s all it is to me and all it has ever been to me.

I can’t speak for all, but I know in my heart that most Southerners feel the same way.

I have no desire to reinstate the Confederacy. I oppose slavery as vehemently as any man, and I believe that every human being, regardless of the color of their skin, is just as valuable as I am and deserves the exact same rights and advantages as I do.

that about sums it up.

i find it interesting that they brought up the confederate flag to attack the right, while leaving the nazi swastika alone (which is normally associated with white supremacists and is available everywhere)

the flag was flown during a time when the south fought against the north’s demands.

it seems appropriate today for this yankee to align with the rebel flag rather then the homo-fascist flag.

question is america... which do you align with. the homo-fascists or those rebelling against it?

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't it Abe Lincoln himself, who when asked by the conductor of a military band what song he wished to hear after the surrender of the Confederacy was "Dixie".

If he can be that magnanimous after a war lasting 5 years, we should be able to accept a symbol of their pride.

And still, there is a failure to communicate. Damnyankees can be SO obtuse....

Nothing like swinging a p*ss-elm club so it connects right between the eyes. Works on mules.

His comments sound like something I could have written myself.

He’s exactly right.

The confederate flag is not a symbol of racism, it’s a symbol of southern pride.

It's a symbol of both. What the Confederate Battle Flag means to white Southerners like Charlie Daniels and what it means to the average black descendant of slaves are two different things. Given the actual history, the fact that it means different things to different people should come as no surprise.

Neither "faction" has a monopoly on dictating the meaning of that particular symbol. Both viewpoints hold some validity, IMHO, and that's where the issue should remain.

Unfortunately, politically correct hysteria has taken hold of the issue, and any semblance of tolerance and rationality were left behind long ago.

This is the totalitarian collectivist mind at work. We're becoming Europeans. It was bound to happen sooner or later...

You can’t reason with radicals intent on stamping out our culture. Theirs is an ulterior motive and they are immune to reason and common sense.

Last week we are told we cannot have the battle flag flying, this week we are told to fly rainbow flags and light up places as a rainbow.

We were told not to fly the flag of defense of state's rights while the socialists destroyed the concept of Federalism and the Republic.

The Confederate flag didn’t kill those good black church members but that devil hate-filled inspired mental case Roof he chose to do evil. Eradicate him instead of the Confederate flag.

What’s wrong with four fried chickens and a Coke?

Yesterday some Brooksville FL residents, by simply showing up with their own flags to observe some leftwing loons try to set a match to a rebel flag, set the socialists scampering back to St Petersberg.

Today, was taking my Dad home from church and while stuck at a light a car comes flying by with a big rebel flag trailing behind it.

The Obama stickers have been long gone for years now.

I think the libs bit off more than they can chew and everyone is tiring of this emasculate America nonsense they have been pushing.

I was a member of the Corps of Cadets at The Citadel the year we re-enacted the 100 year anniversary of the first shots of the Civil War (fired by members of the Corps of Cadets). We were all very proud of our heritage and history. We played Dixie after every touchdown, and had a Dixie flag painted on our water tower.

Just went back for our 50th reunion - Dixie is no longer allowed - and the spirit is waning.

But then, that is exactly the point, isn’t it!

Southern and Proud

This is a wonderful example of the core difference between Obama and most other historical politicians. They would be magnanimous in victory. Obama, however, rubs it in our faces.

If Obama was asked the same question, he'd ask the band to compose a piece and title it "We Northerners Are Better Than You, You Are All Incest-Committing Backwoods Hicks, Ha Ha Ha You Lost"

I’ve heard it said the reason Southerners talk slow is so Northerners can comprehend better.

Nah, there's lots of southerners who have problems with speech comprehension too...........Maybe it just takes them longer to get their thoughts together.

I saw Spirit perform many times in the early 90’s as my twin daughters were members of Southwind Drum & Bugle Corps. Guess I just missed ya...

Southwind is having a big reunion the end of July. My daughters are really excited about it.

Drum & Bugle Corps is a great experience for a young person and it teaches a LOT of discipline.

I think Daniels gets it about right re: the flag for this southern gal...
