Meaning of ‘one nation under God’ died with decision
The Boston Herald ^ | June 28, 2015 | Joe Fitzgerald

Nearly 60 years have passed since that wintry night in Iowa when three of rock and roll’s biggest stars perished in the crash of a small plane, moving songwriter Don McLean to pen words that haunt listeners even now: “The day the music died.”

Perhaps there’s a patriotic lyricist somewhere out there already pouring his or her heart into expressing a similar feeling of forlornness because something surely died yesterday, something of inherent significance in the turbulent history of this country that continues to insist it’s “one nation under God.”

How can we make that claim while casting aside beliefs and understandings that have informed this nation’s character from the days of our founding?

What’s God got to do with?

At one time He had a lot to do with the daily affairs of America.

But, oh, how we have drifted.

He’s mainly on call for emergencies now.

And He’s good to have on your side in an argument, as President Obama demonstrated yesterday in South Carolina, trolling for easy applause by telling the congregation at Pastor Clementa Pinckney’s funeral that the Confederate flag must come down.

“By taking down that flag,” he declared, “we express God’s grace.”

Really? Don’t we do the same thing by honoring what He ordained a marriage to be, a union of one man and one woman in which “the two become as one”?

The U.S. Supreme Court, which opens every session with “God bless this Supreme Court,” is eager to accept His blessings, as long as He understands that it will have the final word on marriage, thank you.

Our would-be leaders are pathetic.

It’s like Hillary Clinton. Formerly opposed to gay marriage, she rushed to the head of the yesterday’s parade, desperately trying to take bows for a victory she once tried so hard to suppress.

Before Massachusetts Chief Justice Margaret Marshall summarily gave the green light to gay marriage here in 2003, all the gay community wanted were civil unions. But once that door was kicked open by judicial fiat, nothing less than “marriage” would do.

If you were against the idea, it meant you were impervious to teen suicides and consumed by hate. The ad hominem attacks were scurrilous but, as we saw yesterday, ultimately effective.

So now what? How about having two wives, or two husbands, or one of each? Who’s to tell anyone that he or she must curb an appetite?

Do your own thing! That’s what the Supreme Court said.

Something quintessentially American died yesterday.

And that’s not hateful. That’s the bitter truth.

It’s now one nation under the 1.5% of the population.

We haven’t been one nation in a long time.

Someone should collect up anti-religious signage and photos of men at gay pride events mocking Jesus, priests, nuns, and religion in general.

Theirs is not a tolerant movement. It is homofascism.

True, and we haven’t been “under God” since at least the legalization of infanticide in 1973.

“one nation under God.”
Don’t doubt that this phrase will be eliminated from the pledge of allegiance.

The only promise that Obama has really kept, “To fundamentally change America”.

Well I’m of the firm belief that ALL federal and state buildings should immediately remove “In God We Trust” anywhere it’s noted. Any mention should also be removed.

Not sure which god they are bowing down to, but it CERTAINLY AIN’T my God!!!!

I heard something the other day, can’t remember where just now, that said the line was actually, “Buy, buy, Miss American Pie”. Interesting.

And what’s the point of having a pledge in the first place? - They’ll get rid of the entire thing.

The progressives won a huge trifecta this past week. The church shooting and the Supreme Court rulings on ObamaCare and marriage. Each by itself is unsettling to our nations foundations but all 3 together is an earthquake the damage of which will be long lasting.

How about “and to the Republic for which it stands”? It appears that that is gone too.

One Nation, in Defiance of God would be more accurate.

The way I am feeling today, ...and from what I am reading on FR and elsewhere - they have unleashed a sleeping giant. Principled and moral people will not accept this outcome. Freedom died with the SCOTUS decision, and separation of the United States will follow one way or another. I feel it in my bones.

Wrong.

That died a long, LONG time ago. When the Supreme Court misquoted Jefferson to impose their "wall of separation" doctrine (1947), it was sick. By the time of school prayer being forbidden, it was already critically ill (1962). When California permitted unilateral marriage repudiation without cause (1969), the idea that America was in any way "under God" was dead and buried.

This all began when we allowed the premise of “free speech” to permeate our culture with lewd images and ideas. It’s been a steady drip, drip, drip from about the fifties until now we’re deluged with obscenities of all kinds. If we had really followed The Word, none of that would have been allowed to seep into our culture. We are a nation that turned its back on the teachings of the Almighty that, in hindsight, would have saved us from what we are experiencing today. Each one of us that lived through those times, either chose to ignore or even enjoy the results of a morally relaxed society, myself included. Now we are going to reap what we have sowed. Like nations in times long past; we could be delivered if we repented of all we have allowed and return to obedience. I don’t see that happening to America. Quite the contrary. We will fall under the weight of G-d’s natural law. Jesus Christ will be the only hope of deliverance for the individual and that only after enduring the persecution that is undoubtedly on its way.

This nation has a god.
The god of this world.

That god offers ‘freedom and liberty’ too.

That is why Hollywood, porn and music industries have their worldwide headquarters in this country. That is the freedom that gets pumped to the whole world.

People of faith are lamenting the wrong freedom and liberty and therein lies where the ‘church’ stands.

And why millions don’t see America as an enemy of the True Elohim of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and not a blessed nation at all- but a ‘cursed one’.
