The Latest on Charleston shooting: Memphis mayor wants Confederate statue, grave out of park

10:30 p.m.

The mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, says he thinks a statue of Confederate General and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest should be removed from its location at a city park.

In a statement emailed to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Mayor A C Wharton Jr. said he would like to see the statue removed from Health Sciences Park. Wharton said the graves of Forrest and his wife, also located at the park, should be relocated as well.

Health Sciences Park was called Forrest Park until the City Council voted in February 2013 to change the name. It also changed the name of Confederate Park and Jefferson Davis Park.

It was not immediately clear if the City Council would consider moving the statue.

Lawmakers have already called for the removal of a bust of Forrest from an alcove in the state Senate chambers.

The suspect in last week's shooting deaths of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina, was seen in photos brandishing the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of hate.

Nathan Forrest had his issues but no man should be turned out of his grave.

Did up the grave? Will they end up cremating the remains at a stadium type venue?

Agreed. I don't care for Forrest, but digging up his grave is bordering on barbarism.

The mayor of one of the most dangerous cities in Tennessee is worried about a grave and statue?

Another democrat:

” He was a pledged delegate from Tennessee to the New York Democratic national convention of 4 July 1868. He served as the first Grand Wizard (head of movement) of the Ku Klux Klan, but later distanced himself from the organization.”

” In 1858, Forrest (a Democrat), was elected a Memphis city alderman.[8]”

Why don’t we fly him to Mars, and bury him there? ;)

They sure want to get all this in before the shooter announces he’s converted to Islam in jail.

The Left is going to overplay their hand on the whole Confederate flag issue and there's going to be a backlash. They're starting to piss off even liberal southerners.

Correct. The proposal was put forth by barbarians, so it is not surprising at all.

"mayor of Memphis, Tennessee, says he thinks a statue of Confederate General and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest should be removed from its location at a city park"

Meanwhile, the Liberals brothers-in -arms in Iraq and Syria are "removing ancient Roman mausoleums(with high explosives) and other artifacts because Roman paganism represents a hateful past and is "offensive" to ISL's delicate, sensitive Islamic sensibilities.

No immediate response from Hillary's campaign office, the White House nor the Democratic National office.

This has been going on for a while. I thought they had already been moved months ago.

I don’t remember where to find it, but there is a story out there, including excerpts from a speech, in which he speaks to the former slaves & accepts a bouquet from one of the women, commenting to the effect that he had always loved the ladies.

He was no racist.
