The coach who recruited Justin Combs to UCLA all but admits to offering him a scholarship based on the star power of dad P Diddy, who was arrested Monday for allegedly attacking Bruins strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi with a kettlebell.
Rick Neuheisel, in charge of UCLA football from 2008-11, acknowledged on his SiriusXM College Sports Nation radio show Wednesday that being the son of a millionaire music mogul made Combs a much more attractive recruit.
"When youre weighing the assets of what a youngster can do for your program, theres no question (being Diddys son) had something to do with it for me.
"Justin is a great kid. His problem was his size. Hes not big enough to be a dominant player.

A thug, P. Diddy (ehem), resorting to thug behavior. Who woulda thunk.
Hopefully, he’ll be wearing a fine orange jumpsuit.
Remember the olden days when scholarships were used to help poor kids attend college?
The kid is 5’7” or 5’8” tops and a defensive back who has only played a couple of plays in 3 years. He’s short and he’s lazy.
Who had not already figured that out? Should’nt this boy be graduating by now? I’m sure the school will be happy to see the both of them go away. Too much handholding and babysitting.
His problem WAS his size.
P Diddy must be so proud. Attempted murder charges (maybe) and getting your son kicked off the team and lose his scholarship.
Well done !
“scholarships” are given to kids for their academics. Athletic scholarships are given to athletes who can generate the revenues to pay for the other kids scholarships.
It is sad that a multi millionaire’s son, who is a so-so player gets the scholarship that could have gone to a better player.
The culture defined the dad, the (gawdawful) almost music, the corruption, the lack of talent, and the the current state of affairs.
Good job, P-dork, you da crook!
And that is why Ricky is no longer a head coach!
Why would they give him a scholarship when his father is a multi-millionaire? I can see their accepting him on the team as a gesture to an entertainment star, but couldn’t he just pay the tuition?
Hi jimbo,
From what I read, the kid also lacks effort and personal responsibility to be on time, and make himself better. In other words, he has a weak mind. He wants everything given to him. That isn’t how major college athletics is run. You produce, or you sit. If you don’t make attempts to get better, you are cast away.
Oh, my Nephew that was formerly a trainer for an NCAA football team said, “You should never question the strength coach. You can get by questioning any other coach, but never the strength coach.”
Gwjack
I went to junior high with Rick. Seems there is trouble for him where ever he coaches.
Hmmm, you do know that a lot of NYC celebs arrange for their kids to be diagnosed with whatever problem for free tuition into the better (k-12) schools?
Having said that, with an "athletic" "scholarship", the academic requirements aren't all that rigorous, either.
If P.Diddy had been serious about his son's education, Brown U. has been known to bend over backwards to help celebs' less-than-mediocre offspring get a real education.
I'll guess that little p. didn't want to leave his homies, but he did want to increase his sexual attractiveness as a UCLA varsity football player, and daddy gets to brag as well.
Not to worry. I'm sure that if Janet Napolitano can find the time to stop screwing up CA's universities, she'll be right on the case to get rid of the strength trainer for racial aggression.
No, I had no idea.
And I'd forgotten about Napolitano. We get washed-up Democrat pols - Erskine Bowles, for example - put in charge of the universities here in NC, too.
Nope, athletic revenues rarely if ever support any academic scholarships. It is generally used to support other athletic departments. In many schools, academic students see (or don’t see) anywhere from $20-40 of their tuition go to support athletic programs.
At UCLA the TV rights alone could fund most D3 schools. Not their football programs. The entire school.
From a Fusky to a Ruin.
