Global Warming Is Now a "Medical Emergency" That Could Wipe Out 50 Years of Global Health Gains

Climate change, if left unchecked, threatens to undermine the last half century of gains in global health. That's the conclusion of a study released Monday by an international commission convened by the Lancet, a prestigious medical journal based in the UK. Declaring it a "medical emergency," the authors argued that the potential impacts of global warming—such as floods, drought, heat stress, catastrophic storms, the spread of disease, and increased food insecurity—pose a "potentially catastrophic risk" to human health.

The study's authors, however, highlight a potential sliver of good news: Tackling the issue immediately presents "the greatest global health opportunity of the 21st century."

Confronting climate change—and therefore achieving better public health and a decarbonized global economy—is no longer a technical or economic question, the report states. The primary barrier is political. "Bold political commitment can ensure that the technical expertise, technology, and finance to prevent further significant climate change is readily available, and is not a barrier to action."

I find Mother Jones extremely scary. My boss used to give me his copies after he finished with them. The Nation is bad enough (he gave me those, too) but Mother Jones is in another universe.

T’is a pity so-called “journalists” (otherwise known as math illiterates in the STEM trade) do not ask some real physicists about absorption curves , etc) so that they can see the idiocy here.

But, then again, given out publik skools.....

I totally agree. But I do need to know something.

If removing carbon out of the air reduces global warming, what happens if we reduce too much carbon and cause another ice age? What is the plan to mitigate this? And what is the plan to do this? And, how much would this cost? And who is holding the money for this?

I'm just trying to apply some good ol' fashioned logic here:

Isn't the most likely cause of lost gains in health care the massive dislocations of people all over the globe? Best way to keep people healthy is within stable communities.

Replace “Global Warming” with “Socialism” and you’d have something there.

Obviously, this is rhetorical. But it is worth noting, without CO2 the planet dies. It is a critical component of life on earth. It is what plants eat.

I’m self sufficient in most things, very mechanically inclined. I could go back to the 19th century technology and probable be fine. I like horses and such. Most couldn’t do it though. I watch Bonanza re-runs and think, it ain’t that bad.

“potentially catastrophic risk” to human health.

Maybe, but we’ve got this Confederate flag thing to worry about first...

We already tried Socialism with horrible results: China under Mao Zedong and the former Soviet Union under Josef Stalin. Circa 100 to 150 million dead later, no thank you.

What is wiping out health gains in the United States is unfettered illegal immigration from every third world sh!thole diseased country in the world.

Their only criteria seems to be an unquestioned propensity to vote Democrat.

I support killing the planet. Its one way to get rid of all the libtards.

I have come to the conclusion that the disease that is called 'humanity' must not be allowed to infect the rest of the galaxy.

Most humans yearn for freedom and to be left alone, but others want to control and censor and manipulate and rule over us.

There have been four great experiments in having a nation that has, as its primary focus, freedom for the individual citizen: Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, post-revolutionary France, and America.... and even of those, three still allowed slaves (America being one)! The most modern example of this experiment is America.

But American freedom is mostly gone, soon to be completely gone... all in the name of 'suppressing hate speech' and 'combating global warming' and 'controlling gun violence' and 'making outcomes equal' and 'forcing citizens to provide for the poor'.

'Making outcomes equal' is the core of communism, and communism has always been the most brutal and oppressive economic and political system on the planet. 'Forcing citizens to provide for the poor' is just a watered-down version of the same, and prevents people and institutions from being able to give of free will.

Since we always seem to trend towards the destruction of individual liberty -- since we almost always, in human history, exist under some tyrant or monarch or king, or some panel or committee or politburo ....

.... I have changed my view from the Star Trek Utopian vision I used to have.

Mankind must be erased from the universe as the disease that it is.
