Britain faces FREEZING winters as slump in solar activity threatens 'little Ice Age'

Climate experts warn the amount of light and warmth released by the sun is nosediving to levels "not seen for centuries".

They fear a repeat of the so-called 'Maunder Minimum' which triggered Arctic winter whiteouts and led to the River Thames freezing 300 years ago.

The Met Office-led study warns although the effect will be offset by recent global warming, Britain faces years of unusually cold winters.

A spokesman said: "A return to low solar activity not seen for centuries could increase the chances of cold winters in Europe and eastern parts of the United States but wouldn't halt global warming.

"Return of 'grand solar minimum' could affect European and eastern US winters."

Long episodes of low solar activity were seen during the Maunder Minimum between 1645 and 1715 and the 'Dalton Minimum' from 1790 to 1830.

Both periods coincided with colder-than-normal global temperatures earning the title from scientists of "Little Ice Age."

The latest study, published in Nature Communications, found reduced solar activity will lead to an overall cooling of the Earth of 0.1C.

A much bigger cooling effect is expected for Britain, northern Europe and North America where thermometers could drop by 0.8C.

Amanda Maycock, of the University of Cambridge and National Centre for Atmospheric Science, said: "It's important that we consider the potential impact of changes in UV output when looking at future climate."

They used to grow grapes and make wine in Britain.

Well if we’re frying up down here, as these idiots claim the Brits should be able to get through a little cold winter. Put a jumper* on. Have a spot of tea and do carry on. *’’jumper’’. What the British call a sweater.

I think they could be right on this one. Most of the global warming stuff is BS, but brief(ish) cooling periods are certainly a known phenomenon. And, they can come on very quickly.

it seems to me that the bitter clingers to the global warming hoax have never even asked the most basic questions.

1) is it real?
2) if so, are we the cause?
3) if so, is it actually a bad thing?
4) if so, can we even stop it?
5) if so, at what cost?

the bitter clingers assume 1) and 2) to be self-evidently true. but they have never looked at 3). it may well be that a couple of degree increase in average temperatures is enough to boost global food output by x% per year and decrease our dependence on oil/nuclear energy by y% per year. there may be many other such tradeoffs to be considered. i have never - in 25 years - seen anyone discuss/debate question 3). the engineer in me sees that unwillingness to examine this question as proof that the bitter clingers aren’t really interested in science. they have a “solution” and they are simply massaging the data to compel the rest of us to embrace their “solution”.

scientific policy should not be set by lawyers, actors, bureaucrats, and politicians. it should be set by scientists, technologists, engineers, etc. and these people should not have any conflicts of interest w.r.t. getting their research funded based on the solutions they propose.
