VIDEO: Mayor Murray unveils rainbow crosswalks on Capitol Hill [ Seattle gay area ]

As Pride Week gets underway in Seattle, Mayor Ed Murray unveiled new rainbow crosswalks at several Capitol Hill intersections Tuesday morning.

There are 11 crosswalks on Capitol Hill getting the rainbow treatment -- for a total cost of more than $100,000 according to the city's transportation director. Seven of those were painted and treated overnight and four others will be finished Tuesday night.

The idea has been discussed for some time, but was delayed by logistics and cost. It was initially said that the colorful crosswalks cost about $6,000 for a total of $66,000 for all 11.

The money comes from fee that developers pay when they block streets and sidewalks to build projects, not other safety money.

"You know, it says something about this neighborhood, it says something about Seattle -- this is a city of very diverse neighborhoods throughout, with character and obviously an opportunity to celebrate pride nationally. We hope to celebrate more than sidewalks in the next few days,” Murray said.

All the crosswalks are east of Broadway on Tenth and 11th Avenues.

The crosswalks are expected to last three to five years, but the city said it plans to maintain them for years to come.

Thanks! (I think....) BTW - I’m not sure if the article mentioned it (I did skim it), but the Mayor is gay.

I never understood using the rainbow colors.

It makes the crosswalk look absolutely fabulous!

I had dealings with Ed Murray when he was a state legislator on the House Transportation Committee back in my advocacy days for freight and passenger rail.

Ed is a pissy little queen.

Hmmm...painting the rainbow right on the ground.

The city is basically giving the finger to the Almighty Lord.

I look off to the west...the Cascadia Subduction Zone is just sitting there. The Seattle Fault runs right under the center of the city.

A major earthquake might wake some people up.

“Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices”

My first thought when I saw this on the news. I smell a lawsuit here. Of course, that flamer mayor Murray never gave any thought to that. His queer agenda is the only reason he was elected.
