S.C. Gov. Haley says 'time has come' to remove Confederate flag from state buildings

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said Monday the Confederate flag should be removed from the grounds of the state capitol, reversing her position on the divisive symbol amid growing calls for it to be removed.

The Republican's about-face comes after nine black church members were gunned down, allegedly by a young white man who embraced the flag as a symbol of white supremacy.

"150 years after the end of the Civil War, the time has come," Haley said after rousing applause, surrounded by Democrats and Republican lawmakers. "That flag, while an integral part of the past, does not represent the future of our great state"

The flag has flown in front of the state capitol for 15 years after being moved from atop the Statehouse dome.

U.S. Sens. Lindsay Graham and Tim Scott, an African-American appointed by Haley, were standing with Haley during her announcement. When she finished, she hugged Scott and South Carolina's only other black congressman, Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn.

The announcement came after state lawmakers met urgently with each other and the governor.

The head of the Republican National Committee has also called for its removal.

Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, both of whom are Republican and running for president, said that whether to remove the flag or not was an issue for South Carolinians to determine.

The Confederates were the sons of the FOUNDERS.

There is a reason why Lincoln is buried in a steel cage under three tons of concrete.

He murdered them.

Just goes to show how successfully this loon was in robing people not only of their lives but their rights as well.

The Confederate flag is not a symbol of hate, it never caused any crime, and the State knows that. To punish peter for Paul’s crime is an injustice just as is to claim Peter spoke Paul’s words is dishonest.

Governor Haley and the so called ‘republicans’ that acted in ill-rational hast today to do just that have lost my respect and my vote. We do not need or want leaders who act so unjustly on the account of somebody’s unfounded and inacruate feelings.
Under such men there is not justice just tyranny of those who can play victim.

While we are at it Slavery is in the past and doesn’t Define South Carolina’s future should we not get rid of the universaly offensive and hateful Slavery monument as well?

Lets put it this way. South Carolina was once part of the Confederacy. Which was a different country. And for some bizarre reason decides to fly this flag on State buildings even though it isn’t the State flag.

Texas was once part of Mexico. What would be your reaction if Texas decided to start flying a Mexican flag on ITS state buildings?

I’m guessing a bit different.....

In what searching I've done so far (admittedly not exhaustive), I haven't seen an actual photo of her posing with a Confederate battle flag. There are some images on the web created by leftists who hatefully tar and feather her with that flag (such as the scurrilous one below) but those are obvious Photoshop "art". As to the issue itself, it was Governor Palin's support that probably led to Haley's rise to governor. To the best of my knowledge, Governor Palin has not disassociated herself from Haley in the wake of the latter's remarks today.

Thanks for another voice of sanity on this thread. I realize we’ve had differences of opinions in the past, but on this one, you’re spot on, IMHO.

No

I am talking about what Palin is saying about the plutocrat RNC exploitative class deciding to join with the american marxists and piss all over South Carolinian’s that had until today been remarkably FAIR and willing to elect a black senator and a Sikh governor who likes to sleep with other men.

That party be over, don’t hold your breath waiting for Palin to lend support to these degenerate monsters.

Emotional Wave.....Republican Cave

We saw this in Indiana and Arkansas over Religious Freedom in March, now this.

Symbols did not cause mass murder and their removal will not stop any mass murder in the future.

God Bless Nikki Haley....but she is wrong just like 95 percent of elected Republicans are ultimately wrong, repudiating or faking conservatism, pretending to have principles when they have none......

“Lets put it this way. South Carolina was once part of the Confederacy. Which was a different country”

Lincoln never recognized the Confederacy as a separate country.

Thanks for the clarification on the matter. As for Haley being or not being a "Southern Belle", she is a native of South Carolina (Bamberg) and all of her education was in-state, including Clemson. While your presumption that she's not a "Belle" may be accurate, she certainly is Southern by birth and background.

If I may ask, what are your thoughts concerning about another (native) Southern governor with Indian heritage, Piyush (Bobby) Jindal?

No flaming here. I’ve evolved on this subject myself. The Confederacy ceased existence 150 years ago, but some people just can’t seem to want to let it go.

Jindal is now a Catholic and supports States rights.

He too is a lame duck but has integrity.

Randhawa is an opportunist of the worst kind, a COC plutocrat beast.

But the citizens of South Carolina in 1862 (and now) sure viewed the Confederacy as a different country.
