S.C. Gov. Haley says 'time has come' to remove Confederate flag from state buildings

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley said Monday the Confederate flag should be removed from the grounds of the state capitol, reversing her position on the divisive symbol amid growing calls for it to be removed.

The Republican's about-face comes after nine black church members were gunned down, allegedly by a young white man who embraced the flag as a symbol of white supremacy.

"150 years after the end of the Civil War, the time has come," Haley said after rousing applause, surrounded by Democrats and Republican lawmakers. "That flag, while an integral part of the past, does not represent the future of our great state"

The flag has flown in front of the state capitol for 15 years after being moved from atop the Statehouse dome.

U.S. Sens. Lindsay Graham and Tim Scott, an African-American appointed by Haley, were standing with Haley during her announcement. When she finished, she hugged Scott and South Carolina's only other black congressman, Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn.

The announcement came after state lawmakers met urgently with each other and the governor.

The head of the Republican National Committee has also called for its removal.

Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, both of whom are Republican and running for president, said that whether to remove the flag or not was an issue for South Carolinians to determine.

Because there is absolutely no other important issue that needs our attention more.

I guess Haley has ‘grown’ in office.

What a disappointment.

By all means. Blacks have the knockout game, destroy the neighborhood game, etc. So let’s blame society’s ills on a piece of cloth.

The political capitol to be gained from this move is absolutely outrageous. As I mentioned on a previous thread, this move by Haley and the GOP is (finally) BRILLIANT political strategy.

The unfortunate part is that it is, as Rush would say, symbolism over substance. This move DOES NOTHING to address the real issues, but it sure does feel darned good and squishy inside, don't it?

Leave it to the GOP - do the right thing, when it doesn't matter one damn bit.

It’s not brilliant political strategy. She will get NO credit from the left or the media (but I repeat myself) for doing this. None. Meanwhile the NAACP and similar leftist racist organizations will simply sense weakness, move the goalposts, and demand that the Confederate Soldiers’ Memorial where the flag now resides also be removed. They will never give her credit and they will never be satisfied, it is not possible to compromise with them. Ever.

It is a state decision. Let’s see how the electorate in SC feels about it.

A man kills nine people and the mob of people want to remove a flag?

Because there is absolutely no other important issue that needs our attention more.

She obviously has some crazy idea that she might be a potential vice-presidential pick. What issue could be more important to her than that?

Scott won't be getting reelected either.

It's 1865 again.

Cue the carpetbaggers.

Eric Erickson on the radio today says we need to “give” this to the black community to show our solidarity. When was the last time radical liberals gave conservatives anything other than a hard time? Shame on all of you who think the absence of that flag would mean 9 people would be alive today. How many died in Chicago this weekend? How many died at Columbine, Ft Hood, Newtown? Who wants to take down the US flag in those places? I hope the SC legislature will stand fast.

If she is motivated by subjective need, but I always thought she was better than that.

Half the people who vehemently oppose the display of the Confederate flag(s) don’t even know who their daddy was was , much less who the great grandfathers , or great grandfathers , were or what they did or what they fought for . Those of us who know should , and will , remember .

It is a crap shoot when Eric Erickson gets something right. This isn't one of those times. This is a game where any "give" is seen as an invitation for more demands.

Don't give those f***ers and inch.

She's a politician. Come crunch time did you really expect her to do anything different?
