Houston district opens ‘Arabic Immersion School’ to create ‘global citizens’

HOUSTON – About 130 Houston student will attend a new Arabic immersion school next year, where they will learn to speak Arabic as they learn “to be truly global citizens.”

“With kids who learn Arabic, as a parent you’re going to set them up for success, as a teacher you’re going to challenge them to do the best they can, but that skill of learning Arabic and being fluent in it really can be life-changing for a Houston kid,” Kate Adams, the principal of Houston Independent School District’s Arabic Immersion Magnet School, told Houston Public Media.

“In addition to the students being fully functionally bilingual in Arabic and English, the bigger goal for me is that I want our students to be truly global citizens,” she said. “And so that doesn’t just mean language fluency or cultural fluency. It’s kind of how you look at the world and how you interact with the world.”

Click 2 Houston reports Arabic is the second most common foreign language spoken by Houston students, presumably behind Spanish. The school is scheduled to launch next year with two pre-kindergarten classes focused on Modern Standard Arabic. Officials plan to add a new grade level each year until those students reach fifth grade.

Do they have a similar publicly funded Hebrew school?

They don’t even have English immersion for illegal alien students.

I heard that texas has the highest population of muslims outside of the middle east. Not just arabs or north african immigrants as a group, but followers of islam.

“Deport Kate Adams”

I disagree. The more born-Americans who can speak Arabic is a big plus for the USA.

After 9/11 we were caught with our pants down because we did not have enough Arabic/Farsi translators.

Further, it is my opinion that all American citizens should be required to become fluent in at least one foreign language. I do not care which language any student may choose to learn as long as we have some translators of every language on the planet to avoid what happened after 9/11. We were having to depend upon native-Arabic speakers translating to English. Many of them could not be trusted because they were sympathetic to Al Qaeda.

And before you ask, yes, I speak one foreign language and can communicate in several, or at the very least, know the general gist of any communication in those other languages.

Not necessarily a horrible idea…if we’re training spies, they have to know the language

If they were just teaching the language, yes.

But this "immersion" is most likely full fledged indoctrination. Be interesting in a couple of years to see how many of these students run off to join ISIS.

skill of learning Arabic and being fluent in it really can be life-changing

That part is probably true. As an aside, joining the Hitler Youth was life-changing as well. Just not in a good way.

The core of the problem is socialized schooling. We need to go back to free market schooling.

I have no problem with kids learning Arabic, but you’ve got to think that this will morph into some sort of Islamic school, if it isn’t that from day one.

BINGO!
I have researched this extensively and am very on it. It’s in my neighborhood. Arabic has failed already in three high schools now they are going for the young ones, Pre-K,Kinder-that is the UN refugee drops from Iraq Syria. We went to HISD school Board meeting and blew out the school board. These trustees and Terry Grier superintendent are going pedal to the metal languages to disguise the general failure to teach the basics in our schools. They are nuts!!
