Well. This is telling.
One of the striking aspects of Donald Trump’s announcement that he is running for president is the vehemence of his critics – on the conservative side.
The normally even-keeled Dana Perino almost foamed on the set of Fox News’ “The Five” as she fumed about Trump’s line that he would not only build a wall that only he could build along the Mexican border but he would make the Mexicans pay for it. Over at National Review the normally astute Kevin Williamson went off not just the deep end but the very, very deep end in a column calling Trump – no kidding – a “Witless Ape.” In which it seems that Trump’s style (“the worst taste since Caligula”) and wife (a “ plastic-surgery-disaster wife”) were as offensive as Trump himself, the latter “a reality-television grotesque…grunting like a baboon about our country’s ‘brand’ and his own vast wealth.”
Let’s start with Williamson, whose piece should perhaps be retitled “Witless Writer Jumps the Shark.”
Having worked his way through a spray of bile unworthy of National Review not to mention the normally serious Williamson himself, there was a Williamson presentation of bankruptcy that was either willfully ignorant or maybe just blissfully so. Not to mention, Williamson revealed himself as historically clueless on the subject of presidents and bankruptcy.
And, oh yes. Let’s not forget the panel that appeared on Bret Baier’s “Special Report” the evening of Trump’s announcement. In which “conservatives” George Will and Charles Krauthammer joined liberal Mara Liasson in dissing Trump to substitute host Doug McKelway.
Why would conservative commentators pile on America’s arguably most famous capitalist? And not just pile on, either. This was, both individually in some cases and certainly collectively a full-blown temper tantrum worthy of a two-year old.

Pal, I'm 74 and I am a life-long Californian and a Conservative Republican who worked with Ronald Reagan when he was governor here. I was merely trying to point out that people change their philosophies over time including maybe Donald Trump. BTW, my wife was a “Goldwater Girl” at the convention in 1964, so you needn't preach to me about RR. He will forever be the “gold standard” by which all presidencies past and future should be measured. When I was in a room with him, you could feel his greatness. When I see the $hit that tries to pass for politicians it makes me want to cry!

Trump most likely could not avoid damage by those same grenades. Even if he can, he is vulnerable enough on his own political statements. Which candidate will invite Oprah or Clinton to the audience?
LOL, your reasoning is bizarre, he was stable enough to become a strange, 69 year old real estate mogul/TV celebrity, self promoter, so he is stable enough to be President?
His favorite president is Clinton’s husband, and he wants Oprah Winfrey as your vice president, and the next president to follow him.
No preaching, and I wish I could have been at that convention. My point is that RR had some four decades’ worth of publicly-stated conservatism by the time he was elected. Trump has nothing of the sort. Trump feels like a weathervane to me.
He flat out said it is not for her. He’s pandering votes by being friendly to all sides but I don’t think he’ll act that way in office.
He’s playing the game.

Its a very insightful article, a shame most of what passes for discussion here is shallow and irrelevant.
It is Trumps status as a political outsider that will make him uniquely attractive to many. That he is truly his own man and will not play by traditional rules will continue to drive the talking heads bonkers.

I read Jeb is worth 9 million, Trump 90 Billion. Trump could be a wild card doing anything. I’m waiting to see how it plays out.

Newsflash and I agree with most of what you say however unlike the greasy politicians Trump doesn’t need a dime of support from anyone.
Not a Trump supporter and I don't believe for a second he's "in it to win it" .... having said that, there are pieces of Trumps message that will resonate with some portion of voting electorate, and he may have pieces of his message that resonate with LARGE portions of the voting electorate.
How many posts have you read here on FR over the last few years (or even DECADE) about securing the border with Mexico and building a wall?
That message is certainly going to resonate with people.
Trump's statements about China are also going to resonate with many blue-collar workers, especially those in the manufacturing sector who've seen their jobs go away or wages stagnate due to the amount of manufacturing that's moved to China.
Trump's going to have his supporters even here on FR. I don't seriously believe Trump's going to end up with the nomination, or run as an Independent. I think he's mouthing off and looking to see who's going to pick up the gauntlet(s) he's throwing down.

He certainly tried. He beat to death the bankruptcy point. Not much other substance to his hyperventilating though. I don’t deny Williamson foamed at the mouth a little, but this boy foamed, in response, like a whole pack of rabid dogs. Pot kettle black doesn’t get you style points.
Kevin Williamson is in a different class. He’s a more skilled writer than this joker could ever hope to be.
