“Roof “had loaded — reloaded — five different times.” according to the witness, and “he just said, ‘I have to do it.’ He said, ‘You rape our women and you’re taking over our country. And you have to go.”

Reloaded five different times? A church full of people? How was he not eating the gun after the first reload?

While the focus here should be entirely on the victims and their families, one can’t help but notice that, from a gun-rights standpoint, this could have been much worse.

Accounts are that the shooter used a .45 and reloaded five times. That suggests that he was shooting a 1911 - a hundred year old design with a low capacity magazine. This demonstrates the futility of gun control. I predict that the focus of opponents of gun rights will be on background checks and banning body armor.

His grandfather was named Andrew Carson Cowles (1920-1988). He was named after his great grandfather's (Col Calvin Josiah Cowles) brother, Col. Andrew Carson Cowles (1833-1881), of the 75th Regiment, North Carolina Militia, 18th Brigade. Calvin Cowles second wife was the daughter of Governor William Woods Holden (1818-1892) who was impeached on December 14, 1870 and removed from office on March 22, 1871.
