Now the Spanish government is planning to tax homes that produce their own energy through solar power and store some of it using batteries. El País reports: <> A draft decree prepared by the Industry, Energy and Tourism Ministry establishes a new fee to discourage the use of batteries or other storage systems by people who produce electricity, with solar or photovoltaic panels for instance, and who are connected to the national power grid.

This latest royal decree follows on the heels of an earlier one announced in 2013 that levied a tax solely on those who generate their own electricity. Once passed into law, intrepid small-time energy producers will be forced to pay a backup toll for the power from their solar panels, in addition to the access toll paid by everyone who consumes electricity from the conventional grid.

What’s worse, in order to figure out who is producing what level of energy (and, of course, how much to tax it), all solar panels would have to be hooked up to the grid. Energy producers who don’t connect to the grid could face a fine of up to 30 million euros (yes, seven zeros!). As Forbes reports, the intention is clear: to scare taxpayers into connecting to the grid in order to be taxed:

Government’s view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

"The government already thinks it owns the air, so why not the sun too....

Gawd..."

The Democrat Party run state government of Maryland already thinks it owns the rain that falls from the sky and is taxing everybody on the rain that falls on their property. The new Republican governor of Maryland has said he's going to get rid of the tax but he's done nothing about it as far as I know.

The “Rain Tax” was voted-in in Maryland a couple of years ago.

Then it’s time for the people of Spain to rise up and kill their oppressors. And if they won’t rise up as free men then let them lie down as the slaves that they are.

You are absolutely right. The reason for widespread pessimism amongst men of courage is that they believe themselves to be a small minority.

Indeed. One of Dem governor Martin O'Malley's crowning achievements. And now the buffoon wants to challenge Hitlery for the Dem nomination, so he can be elected president and bring this same oppressive big government brilliance to everyone.

Collect the solar energy under cover of darkness.

Problem solved.

Ironic, considering Spain almost went bankrupt subsidizing decentralized solar power years ago. Now, having encouraged homeowners to go solar, they slap new taxes on the suckers to help pay for the still essential grid. How progressive.
