A teen shot and killed by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper in Cocoa Sunday night has been identified.
The Brevard County Sheriff's Office said Zane Terryn, 15, of Palm Bay, shot FHP Lt. Channing Taylor in the shoulder and was killed when Taylor returned fire.
According to investigators, Terryn and his girlfriend, Morgan McNeil, 16, had allegedly planned to drive to Ohio and commit suicide.
Investigators said McNeil took a handgun and money from a relative's Palm Bay residence and then she and Terryn began driving north on Interstate 95.
According to investigators, when the two stopped at the Pilot Gas Station at State Road 520, Taylor approached their vehicle when he noticed a headlight wasn't working.
Investigators said as Taylor was speaking with the driver, McNeil, Terryn pulled out a gun and began shooting at Taylor, hitting him in the shoulder.
Taylor fired once, striking Terryn, investigators said.
According to investigators, McNeil attempted to drive away but struck a boat being pulled on SR 520. Other troopers arrived at the scene and took her into custody.
Terryn was pronounced dead at the scene. Taylor was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center and has since been released.
McNeil and is charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and with second-degree felony murder. She is being held in jail without bond, sheriff's officials said.
The sheriff's office is investigating the shooting and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the trooper's use of force.
Taylor is on paid administrative leave during his recovery and the FDLE investigation.
