I’ve heard James Webb say that the military he was in during the 1960’s was the best in his lifetime. When I graduated high school, my class eventually sent nine persons into the service, two of those females. So roughly 7/90 young men showed up to serve in some capacity. Let me assure you that of the remaining 80 or so, many would have made superb service members, whether active or reserve...had conscription with limited deferments been in effect, the nation would have had a better military.
My point was that you were in a way cutting off your nose to spite your face. My advice to men who were in units they disliked was to find another unit. In my area it is quite possible and don’t forget that crossing services is very easy in the reserves: many guys go between the Army, Air Force, Coast Guard, etc. reserve components. A friend of mine who was an Army NCO for 13 years finished up his time (over a decade out of the service) in the Air National Guard...he loved it and now has his twenty years in.
The SF 86 was changed during Slick Willie’s reign—lterally half of his cabinet couldn’t pass an SSBI.
They took off all orientation questions and specifically reduced the scope of drug inquiries to seven years.
Well, apparently he’s already a ‘Chief of Staff’..........................
At Monica time, I spoke with one of the FBI agents who did the SSBIs on the WH staff. There is an interesting, and very bad concept at play here.
The Bureau runs the SSBI, and reports its findings, but has no authority to give or deny, or even recommend issuance or denial of any WH clearance.
They had senior WH employees smoking pot IN THE WH, histories of serious felonies, histories of other elements that would create a bar to even a Confidential clearance in the military, but nothing was ever done, because the office of POTUS had the only approval authority in these things, and wanted all their political allies with them.
Slick and Super Dyke couldn’t have cared less.
Don’t doubt it at all. Either way, the SSBI questions changed drastically after DADT. It’s hard to think back to all the shenanigans of those years.
At least we had some opposition back then. Today, it’s not even crickets; it’s a hallelujah chorus from “our” side. Just disgusts me!
The FBI agent, forgot his name but he wrote a book about all this Clinton stuff, had an office in the basement of the WH, because he handled all the SSBI materiel.
Local FBI Field Offices in the applicants’ cities would do all the field work, interviews, records checks, etc, forward it to DC, then the WH agent would put it all together for the report to the Clintonistas who were doing the hiring. The Clinton people had the final, and only, say whether or not someone was hired.
If memory serves, he said that no person was ever NOT hired because of a bad SSBI.
He even wrote about young WH employees being told to go to their cars during the workday if they needed to toke up, as the smell of them hitting their reefers at their desks was permeating the WH.
His best story was of an old WH employee who was in charge of things like hot water boilers. He was one of those great old guys who knew everyone and could fix anything.
One day he walked into the SA’s office and handed the SA the required notice about cancelling his security clearance, as he was quitting after 40 years.
The agent asked why. The old technician told him of walking past an office and seeing two Clinton appointees screwing on a desk, open door and all.
The agent hated to see him go, so he tried to calm him, reminding him of the Kennedy days, etc.
The old man replied.... “But this was two guys..” and walked out.
Just remembered. The SA was Gary Aldrich. His book “Unlimited Access”
