Woman who was ‘beaten, strangled and raped’ by crew member is suing cruise company

A passenger on board a cruise ship who was beaten, raped and almost thrown overboard by one of the crew members, is suing the cruise company.

Now the victim is suing Holland America after it was determined that her attacker, Ketut Pujayasa, used a master key to enter the woman’s cabin and hide on her balcony until she returned.

During the attack, which lasted over an hour, Pujayasa beat the woman with blunt objects including a laptop, strangled her, raped her, and even attempted to throw her over the side of the vessel.

The 31-year-old woman’s screams for help were heard by other passengers, who reported them to the ship’s staff members.

However security reportedly took 45 minutes to respond, and even then were unable to enter the victim’s room.

Pujayasa, a 29-year-old employee originally from Indonesia, pleaded guilty to the incident which took place on Valentine’s Day last year, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Now the married victim is suing the cruise company for negligence.

Her attorney John H Hickey told MailOnline the company were ‘grossly negligence’ for allowing Pujayasa to have a key which accessed all cabins.

He added: ‘To top it off, the cruise line’s system is that when the other passengers dial 911 they get the front desk, not security, and the front desk responds to the scene some 45 minutes to an hour later and does not even have access to the cabin?’

‘If this is not the definition of outrageous, I don’t know what is.’

In a statement Holland America said: ‘To our knowledge, no incident like this has occurred before in our company’s 142-year history. It is our highest priority to ensure the safety and security of our guests.

‘We do strongly refute the statement that emergency calls to our staff related to this situation were given anything but the highest priority.’

Where was the ship registered? If a ship is registered to (for example) the Bahamas isn’t it considered Bahamian territory and under Bahamian laws? Just saying... The cruise line may be able to get this thrown out pretty easily and remanded to another country.

Maybe it’s because I have two sisters, and was very [protective of them growing up, but I have always believed rape should be a capital offense. And this filthy creature should be swinging, at this point, for what he did to this woman.

Did she come back from the dead to file this lawsuit? Or does this "writer" not realize that "strangled" means "choked to death"?

I believe most cruse ships are registered in countries other than the U.S. to avoid horrendous taxes and labor laws.

I didn’t notice where the rape happened, that might have something to do with where a civil case is tried.

(The article itself is from the U.K.)

I would love to be at sea for a few weeks, but NEVER on one of these cruise ships.

My wife and I have spent up to 30 on our boat and we loved it, but it’s not big enough to cross the oceans....I’d run out of gas. LOL

It was a more detailed article......named the specific ship.....the type of nudie cruise with details, etc.

They could essentially be nude except at dinner and when in port.

I didn’t either.....
What a yuck factor!
I doubt the general public knew this......until the details came out about this incident.
And obviously, , some articles omitted it.
But I did read it......

When I got out of the USMC in 1963, after serving four years in the FMF, I swore I'd never board another ship of any kind.
I spent 13 months on the DMZ and rotated to Lejeune in Sept '68. Only six weeks later I was stuck on a rust bucket LST for a six month Carib.
I have NEVER, and will NEVER, go to sea again, as long as I live.

Ah, you lot should.

Get the right company (Royal Caribbean, p&o etc) and they are fantastic. Amazing ships (esp RC), great accommodation, great fgood, superb entertainment.....and that’s before you get off the ships and see the world.

I have ‘cruised’ the west and eastern Med, a Baltic cruise to Russia/Baltic States, and would love to do a Canadian cruise as well as the eastern USA and the Caribbean.

Through these, I have seen Moscow, St Petersburg, Sardinia, Sicily, Gibraltar, Naples, Sorrento, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt and many other places. From Red Square to the Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Great tours, great memories, and never a problem at all on the any of the ships. Everything first class.

Many of us will never see the kind of money required for what you describe-and certainly not in this economy. That said, I’m glad you enjoyed it all-it does sound fabulous...

I happen to be one of those people who does not like crowds or a bunch of organized activities when I’m on holiday/vacation-it is just too much like being part of a herd, and that is something I won’t do at all-I live in a remote rural area and love it...

Ah, I can tell you’ve never crossed the Pacific from San Diego to Okinawa in July during the height of the typhoon season in a troop compartment on the USS John C. Breckenridge with 100 other Marines many of whom didn’t bathe during the entire 30 day crossing. If you were lucky, you were assigned a top bunk in the six high stack, and your bunk mates couldn’t vomit on you during the frequent periods of foul weather when you were all locked below deck and the ship wallowed from side to side and the vomit filled deck sloshed from one bulkhead to the other.

At about two weeks in the July heat, I got what I thought was a heat rash all over my body until I scratched one of the scabs and it ran across my arm. It was a crab and I don’t mean the crustacean variety. We were all infested with crabs and body lice from the tops of our heads to our toes.

At the time, the USS John C. Breckenridge was considered a “luxury liner” of the US Navy troop transport fleet, and compared to the USS Henrico, it was.

No, no matter how hard the wife pleads with me, I ain’t never gonna get on another ship.

These cruise ships are horrible places. A floating tin can was never made for hundreds of people - it’s not clean or healthy.

A 3 wk European cruise with best accommodation usually costs me about £2500-3000.

Europe is a lot further from where I am, so the price is a lot higher-but cruises to places here on the American continent can be had for 3-5K, but that is a couple of months of income in these hard times. You still risk catching a disease, being robbed or having an accident happen to you on a cruise-they are still Klingon prison ships here...
