Anarchy in Baltimore: Residents claim police have deserted them in wake of Freddie Gray riots as murder rate soars to highest in 15 years

Jennifer Jeffrey, 31, and son Kester 'Tony' Browne, 8, were killed Thursday They became the city's 37th and 38th homicide victims this month Residents have barricaded their doors in fear of ongoing violence Some have compared parts of the city to the Wild West Others have said virtually no police have been on the streets since riots Arrests are down almost 50 per cent on the same time last year Police claim they are being met with 'hostility' during confrontations

As one of the city's deadliest months comes to an end, terrified residents have compared parts of Baltimore to the Wild West.

In the wake of the Freddie Gray riots, families have barricaded themselves inside their homes, too afraid to leave, while those on the streets walk around wielding guns - because there are allegedly no police around to arrest them.

Arrested are down 50percent and homicides are at their highest level in 15 years. In the Western District, there have been more murders in the first five months of this year than in all of 2014.

Neighborhoods such as West Baltimore, which had seen heavy policing because of endemic drug and gang violence in recent years, have experienced a reversal, with citizens claiming they have been virtually abandoned.

But embattled law enforcement officials claim they are 'under siege' from criminals taking advantage of the unrest, while officers complain they are met with hostility while policing certain areas.

I guess a “kinder and gentler” way of policing is to concentrate on real crimes like issuing parking violations, cracking down on jaywalkers, speeding, and detailing the inside and outside of squad cars. You know, work the politicians think is indispensable. As for thuggery and murder, not so much. The victims of these crimes just picked the wrong place and time to live their lives. Thugs and murderers just got to do what they do and politicians wouldn't want to hurt the thugs and murderers self esteem.

You kind of get the impression that the people in charge don't know what they are doing.

Let's pray that's the case...

There was no grand jury. There was only Mosby running her own investigation without using her normal investigation team. And then she outrageously overcharged in order to appease the mob.

If the cops broke policy, it should be punishable. However from what I have read, the policy was 3 days old and may not have been fully disseminated yet.

The politicians ordered the police to stand down and allow the city to burn. I fully expect that the mayor still supports the non proactive policing policy now being followed. She doesn’t want the police to act, but the community as a whole suffers when they withdraw from the field. So the police are damned either way.

You have your own straw dogs, FRiend. The police ARE bound to follow the mayor’s orders.

You have clearly decided that these cops can do no right.

We’ll put. That’s where it’s heading. That’s also why they hate the second amendment so much.

Police are under siege in every quarter. They are more afraid of going to jail for doing their jobs properly than they are of getting shot on duty.

Hey cops!

Sounds like a good time to move someplace normal and get a cop job.

I think we should all show our support for Baltimore during this time of need.

Everyone should chip in a few bucks and ship an inexpensive disposable bodybag to the Mayors office. These bags can be purchased over the internet and shipped direct.

Can you just imagine the warm feeling those folks would feel when our heart felt gifts start arriving. Hundreds, if not millions, of bodybags arriving at your doorstep simply must change ones day.

~~Support Baltimore — BAG IT.~~

How am I wrong, wrong, wrong? Saying it doesn’t make it so.
The cops are not doing their jobs. Period! They are trying to make the powers that be wish they had not indicted the 6 cops. That is blackmail. Fire them.

The city police had rules about how someone was to be put in a paddy wagon. The rules were put in because the city had lost a large law suit recently.
The cops that arrested Freddie and put him in the paddy wagon did not go by the policy and Freddie died. The driver of the paddy wagon did not go by the rules and Freddie died.
Now the cops are trying to control the City of Baltimore by not doing their jobs. Fire them.

You are trying to tie a half dozen things together to prove the cops are doing just fine trying to control the city. There is no justification for cops not doing their job and taking the money. The only reason for the cops not doing their jobs is they want to do what they want to no matter what the rules and laws are. How dare the lowly non cops telling the cops how to do their jobs! Everyone knows that the society revolves around what the cops wants us to do!

The new rule, adopted nine days before Gray’s arrest, was sent out in an email that contained five policy changes. Until we hear from the officers, we don’t know if they had even been made aware of it or not. They don’t have computers on their beat. It is entirely possible that they did not know. It is likely that the Police Union is fighting that directive being mandatory because of the danger it puts police in when they are dealing with violent prisoners.

I believe that the reason they put him in the paddy wagon lying down was to minimize his chance of being hurt, because at the time he was arrested he was not being cooperative. Two of his past arrests had involved assault.

Grays toxicology tests showed heroin. He was not a known heroin user, so it is likely that he swallowed the heroin he was selling when spotted earlier by an undercover policeman doing a hand to hand transaction.

Gray’s symptoms, difficulty breathing, convulsions (he was thrashing around in the van), cardiac arrest, unconsciousness, coma, are all symptoms of heroin overdose.

In the aftermath of the riots and the charges being brought against the officers, they are no longer confident in doing their jobs. Any mistake could end their career and worse. Every time they attempt to make an arrest, they are mobbed with a crowd. In that environment, it makes doing their job impossible. The same people that were complaining of police being everywhere are now complaining that there are no police. Maybe they need to see this for a while in order to appreciate the police.

I don’t see this Police Dept. ever getting where it needs to be under this Mayor and Prosecutor. That well is poisoned even worse than de Blasio did for NYPD.
