When it Counts: Huck, Cruz, Walker in the Lead
Real Clear Politics ^ | 5/29/2015 | Morris/McGann

The conventional wisdom shows Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul strongly competing for the Republican presidential nomination. But a close analysis of the latest Quinnipiac University National Poll indicates that with strong elements of the Party's right wing, they perform poorly in comparison to Mike Huckabee, Ted Cruz, Scott Walker and, for now, Ben Carson.

Among all Republican voters, the poll shows Bush, Walker, Rubio, Huckabee and Carson are all tied at 10 percent each while Paul lags at 7 percent and Cruz at 6 percent.

But an analysis of the three key conservative groups that drive the nominating process tells a different story:

Very Conservative:

--Carson 14 --Huckabee 13 --Walker 12 --Cruz 11 --Bush 8 --Rubio 8 --Paul 8

Tea Party:

--Cruz 17 --Walker 13 --Rubio 12 --Carson 12 --Huckabee 10 --Paul 9 --Bush 6

Evangelicals:

--Huckabee 17 --Cruz 10 --Bush 9 --Walker 8 --Paul 8 --Carson 8 --Rubio 6

The tea party and the evangelicals are the two most important groups in a Republican primary. Cruz dominates the tea party field and does well among evangelicals.

No contest-- Constitutional conservatives have waited generations for a candidate like Ted Cruz. He's the last chance we got.

If conservative groups drive the nominating process, what happened the last two times out?

2008, Thompson punted, and the only choice was Huck— 2014, newt and rick collectively rec’d more votes than romney.

Also, as you know, they all campaign as conservatives-— none of them campaign as moderates. I think that’s why morris says
conservatism drives the primary process.

I can lie and say I understand the primary process well. I am just learning it. I fear jeb still. I don’t trust the powers that be.

curious about how Libertarians would place them. I am a Constitutional Conservative who has left the Republicans for the Libertarian party. I wager I am not alone. I would vote for Cruz. Huckabee, Bush - no way. Walker is a waffler. Not impressed. Rand Paul has yet to convince me he is up to it.

I don’t get why so many people are running. I mean, Santorum, Graham, Huckabee really have supporters?

It’s been said a lot on FR that Cruz is a good choice. Rather unusual that such consensus happens.

I am very high on Ted Cruz, but there needs to be a place in politics for Carly. Watch her dismantle Katie Couric:

Personall opinion only here, but the assumed republican field has two top tier candidates in Cruz and Walker, and a long list of hasbens and wannabes. While it may be unfair to Fiorina I put her in the wanna be category (even if based on very little I think she may be one of the more likely to break out). The hasbens include Bush, Huck, and Pataki.

They will split the vote for Jeb to get the nomination. That is the plan.

I’m sure you’ll learn from experience.

I really don’t think Bush has a chance— more likely, the establishment will get behind Walker or Rubio- depending on which one does well. Romney will always be a wild card, might even trot him out at the convention.

06/22— that’s my birthday.
