Berlin is to be the only state in Germany to introduce rent controls immediately after the law allowing them comes into effect on June 1st.

While other states have said that they’re interested in the law, none of them have set a firm deadline for when they will introduce controls.

The new measures allow state governments to define areas with high upwards pressure on rents and set limits on year-to-year increases.

Landlords won’t be allowed to charge rent more than 10 percent higher than the local average in the region. …

OY!!! I work in Berlin a few months of the year. This will be horrid. It’s already damned near impossible to rent a little apartment ANYWHERE in Berlin let alone the state of Brandenburg. Berlin is already over run with New Yorkers looking for the city life on the cheap. This will really crowd the city even more and kill the labor force.

Then bring in more Turks to work more cheaply! That will solve the problem!

Force it to be cheaper for some means it will be more expensive for others and upkeep will slow down.

Don't worry, pal. Rent control laws will encourage developers to build new apartments, because the developers won't have to worry about setting rents. The government will kindly set the rents for them.
