Memorial Day is to honor the dead. Even the wounded take a back seat today in deference to the ultimate sacrifice paid by those left behind.

At Camp Pendleton in 1968, I tagged along with another Corporal who was delivering mail to a guy from our unit who'd broken a leg......he was in some sort of big, open orthopedic ward, and I was shocked to see maybe twenty naked amputees in their beds, many in some sort of traction.

Nightmarish....
