71 arrested during protests over acquittal of Cleveland police officer

CLEVELAND — Cleveland police made 71 arrests Saturday during protests against the Michael Brelo verdict, Police Chief Calvin Williams said Sunday. Authorities attempted to give demonstrators the space to exercise their First Amendment rights, but they had no choice but to make arrests when the protests became violent or when protesters refused to disperse, he said.

Police arrested demonstrators in downtown Cleveland on Saturday night following the acquittal of a police officer who stood trial in the 2012 shooting deaths of two unarmed people.

CNN video showed police in riot gear moving down East Fourth Street, a strip of restaurants, and pushing back protesters. The officers yelled, “Move back!” in unison as they advanced.

A CNN crew saw at least 15 people being taken into custody by police in riot gear, accompanied by troopers. They were loaded into vans and taken away.

Three people were arrested for aggravated riot, felonious assault and obstructing justice after an object was thrown through a restaurant window, injuring a patron, police said in in a tweet.

Multiple arrests were made at East Fourth Street because of “unlawful behavior by large crowd,” another tweet said. Police appeared to greatly outnumber protesters.

Protesters took to the streets immediately after Judge John P. O’Donnell acquitted Officer Michael Brelo on charges of voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault.

The crowd assembled outside the judicial center in Cleveland for two hours following the announcement of the verdict.

Some chanted “no justice, no peace” and “black lives matter,” words heard in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York, where sometimes-violent demonstrations occurred after African-Americans died at the hands of white police officers....

“black lives matter”......except of course for the 10,000 or so feral blacks killed by other feral blacks every year.

Compare this to the number of lynching’s over a nearly 100 year time span:

Nearly 3,500 African Americans and 1,300 whites were lynched in the United States between 1882 and 1968, mostly from 1882 to 1920.[8]

aggravated riot, felonious assault and obstructing justice

About time the Police acted on "Serve and Protect" towards lawbreakers.
Good for the Cleveland police force and a brave Mayor standing
against rioters.

Police appeared to greatly outnumber protesters.

Uh oh! Did Sharpton's Rent-A-Mob bus break down on the way to Cleveland?

The paid, professional field commanders were probably targeted for arrests as well, and probably got swept up in the mass arrests, which means Cleveland probably nipped this in the bud, and it is unlikely the protests will continue in a violent fashion.

Long and hot for the paid rioters. Americans are getting real tired of these paid criminals.

This is becoming so common-place that soon it won’t even make the news. Yawn.

Looks like when the car backfired, both the driver and the police thought a gun was fired. In light of what has been going on, the driver probably thought the cops were shooting at him, got scared and took off. The situation then escalated and this officer jumped onto the hood of the car and shot dead the driver and his wife.

That is all I can get from the account here.

CLEARLY LAW ENFORCEMENT, ONCE AGAIN, overreacted. CLEARLY, the cop invalves here acted irresponsibly in shooting and killing the unarmed driver and the passengers.

The cops were apparently tossing so much lead they didn’t realize nobody was shooting back.

Clearly, cops are out of control. And they misbehave, everyone else winds up bearing the burden of the consequences, whole they and the courts close ranks to protect them.

The judge was wrong. One of the people executed here did nothing at all. The other was guilty of a minor misjudgement which can be explained by the circumstances yet paid with his life. Meanwhile, the “professionals” responsible walk away scott free.

This misbehavior by cops has to stop, the violet reaction of the black public to these actions has to stop and the system has to correct this.

AGAIN:

Residency requirements
Civilian review boards with authority to fire
a replacement of police chief with civilian public safety directors
Elimination of the PBA and FOP
Cessation of police militarization
Public monitoring of all police academy courses
Body cameras and car cameras

If this isn’t stopped, it will destroy our society from within.

Authorities attempted to give demonstrators the space to exercise their First Amendment rights

I guess they took a cue from Marilyn whoever in Boston and changed "space to destroy" into "exercise whatever."

It isn't so much nowadays as "black lives matter" as it is "black protests matter"....all you have to do is add to it and give them some space to destroy, loot and burn.

Baltimore. But the city really doesn’t matter. There are hundreds like her in urban cities all across this country.

It’s going to be a long and hot summer.

I spoke with a Cleveland Metroparks Ranger last summer - he knew then that this kind of activity was coming. Even then, officers were already taking extra precautions.

“This is getting pretty old.”

Yes it is.
Leading up to such shootings is the poor attitude among young black people that trying to better oneself in school or the workplace is “acting white” and when a yute or yutes feel “disrespected” and kill someone: “Snitches get stitches”.
Every other American ethnic group has managed to better itself within a generation or two; even with AA, set-asides and a plethora of federal and state programs, African-Americans have been here, what—400 years.
How much more time do they need to get their acts together, to stop the whining and grieving and Treyvon/Brown/and on-and-on BS?
I’m out of patience with the Sharpton/Jackson/Obama nonsense as well.
