Texas hunter shoots endangered Namibian rhino for $350,000

Windhoek (AFP) - A US hunter who paid $350,000 to kill a black rhinoceros in Namibia successfully shot the animal on Monday, saying that his actions would help protect the critically-endangered species.

Corey Knowlton, from Texas, downed the rhino with a high-powered rifle after a three-day hunt through the bush with government officials on hand to ensure he killed the correct animal.

Knowlton, 36, won the right to shoot the rhino at an auction in Dallas in early 2014 -- attracting fierce criticism from many conservationists and even some death threats.

He took a CNN camera crew on the hunt to try to show why he believed the killing was justified.

"The whole world knows about this hunt and I think it's extremely important that people know it's going down the right way, in the most scientific way that it can possibly happen," Knowlton told the TV channel in footage released Wednesday.

"I think people have a problem just with the fact that I like to hunt... I want to see the black rhino as abundant as it can be. I believe in the survival of the species."

Evidently you haven’t read through my other posts here on this thread...I haven’t the slightest problem with meat hunting...I’ve been doing that myself for over 50 years...It’s those that kill and waste that irritates me...

A big part of the violent elephant problem comes from african poachers killing off mature bull elephants and the young ones not having mature bulls to emulate and learn from. Money from trophy hunters helps hiree guards to protect the animals from the criminal nals. Are you against that?

My guess is, you actually have spent very little time in ‘the wild.”

The excitement was not in killing it, it was in hunting it. You need to spend some time with the classics, and then get out of your cement jungle.

I am spending the weekend on over 1000 private acres which has plenty of fish and other wildlife but thanks anyway.

Not at all against guarding against poachers...In Kruger National Park 11 poachers have been killed by South African military, in fact...More power to the guards...

5. Leave them alone.

They managed to get to a population of 850,000 last century without being shot. They managed just fine dealing with the older Bulls. Man doesn’t have all the answers.

My understanding is the problem with young male elephants is lack of the presence of mature male role models corrected by transportation of said males into the population which has rectified the problem when so employed. The analogy with socially aberrant behavior among young human males similarly deprived of positive male role models is startling.

No problem either way-its part of my philosophy of liberty-he bought a legal tag for a critter. The locals ate it, the animal dies anyway or is poached. Fits in with the LORDS directive to oversee/care for and subdue the world, as it was given or our benefit . Species by the 10ks or more have passed along the way of the dodo ( not necessarily by man’s hand).

I kill and eat and display certain specimens of wild game. I would kill an inedible critter ( won’t eat a lion/cat) for trophy too, but have not for a while.

W don’t live just for survival any longer, do we? his line of thought could extend to almost any thing not a necessary for life support....

Finally, this guy did not just shoot it for a wall hanger-he spent $350k (plus airfare, lodging, gratuities and transport in Africa) to fund rhino conservation-that’s a bit more than a mount would cost....

Best

We tend to do the same thing in West Texas, our ranch is not the biggest in the county but it total 42 square miles. And that ain’t nothing when your talking Africa.

We die of old age. Perhaps you could start up a hunting game at the nursing home where you shoot the person just because. You must seriously be sarcastic in your post hopefully.

I never understood people that used dogs to tree cats or set bait for bears or whatever. After talking with a few briefly I got a bit of understanding. It’s not the way I would hunt, but I who am I to judge the way they have hunted for generations. (Well - not in my state anymore after they made some new laws).

I understand folks not wanting to kill an animal just for a trophy, or to thin out pests just for the sport. So fine - don’t do it. But then they think they have the right to make laws against those that do. I’m guessing there are just as many folks that think using a firearm to hunt is not sporting, or even archery. “Give the deer a fair chance - get out there with a stick and a rock”.
