Marques Haynes, the legendary Harlem Globetrotters showman often called the greatest dribbler in basketball history, has died. He was 89.

He died Friday in Plano, Texas, of natural causes, the Globetrotters said. CEO Kurt Schneider said “basketball has lost one of its most iconic figures.”

Haynes made the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1998, the first Globetrotter to be so honored. He had two stints with the touring team — from 1947-53 and 1972-79.

Probably my favorite Globetrotter as a kid...the guy who could dribble better than anyone.

“Marques Haynes, to show you how!”

RIP

My 2nd favorite after Meadowlark Lemon. Back in those days you did not have pro sports on every night a week. The only time you could see the Globe Trotters was on a Saturday.

I got to see them live once, way back in the early 60's I think, when they were barnstorming small towns across the country.

They were at the high school gym in a nearby town in northern Michigan.........

Saw Haynes with The Magicians - a Globetrotters clone. He was flat-out incredible.

Saw him also with the Magicians in the mid 50s in a small college gym in Hays Kansas. Fantastic!

You refer, of course, to Fort Hays State.

It's off-topic, but FReepers need to know that Hays, KS and Fort Hays State are the hoe o one of the finest museums of natural history in the country -- The Sternberg Museum of Natural History

Many of the more famous exhibits (including the "fish-within-a-fish") have been recovered from digs within 100 miles of the Museum. And the Sternberg usually has an early and prominent place on all the travelling exhibits -- especially those coming out of the Field Museum (such as "Sue, the tyrannosaurus").

If you're in the area, don't miss it.

Same here. They came to our town (in TX) in the early ‘70’s. Got most of their autographs. I have no idea what happened to those, though :-/
