Obamacare May Force Some Insurers to Boost Their Premiums an Alarming Amount
Slate ^ | May 22, 2015 | Mark Joseph Stern

On the whole, the Affordable Care Act is working pretty well, getting more people insured and increasing the quality of insurance overall. But on Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported an alarming development: Health insurers on many state exchanges are looking to boost their premiums a ridiculous amount in 2016. New Mexico's leading provider, for instance, is seeking a 51.6 percent hike, while Maryland's is seeking a 30.4 percent hike. (Insurers in other states, like Vermont and Indiana, are asking for minimal increases.)

Libertarian and conservative outlets are, predictably, citing the rate hike as yet another Obamacare catastrophe. But it's actually a fairly foreseeable—and possibly temporary—problem. The ACA forced a bunch of uninsured people to get insurance. A hefty amount of these newly insured people were sick when they joined their new plan. Suddenly able to afford treatment, these sick people drained insurers' funds. But as they regain their health and remain on their plan, they'll stop draining their insurers' resources and start boosting them instead...

the rate hike . . . actually a fairly foreseeable—and possibly temporary—problem.

A temporary rate hike in a mandatory program is like a temporary FedGov program. There is no such thing.

Obamacare forces premiums paid to big insurance companies up with mandatory coverage bringing in more cash than ever, plus it increases copays bringing more cash into big hospital-medical groups.

Its a cash cow for big special interests disguised as a progressive liberal breakthrough by Obama and fake fought against by the GOP Establishment that will never make any big changes to it.

Obamacare and Romneycare before it in Massachusetts were meant to bail out the healthcare industry which couldn’t bear the costs of serving the uninsured.

I know that it’s useful to see what kind of propaganda the Statists are pumping out, but aren’t we overdoing the number of Slate links?

It’s destroying my appetite. Have a care for the welfare of others, please.

The rates will get unbearably high, and the choices of insurance company will diminish until the Democrats can say, “The only way we can make it work is Single Payer. The government will be your insurance company.” This was their goal from the beginning, and everything is going according to plan.

...Suddenly able to afford treatment...

The people I know, who were previously unable to afford insurance (due to pre-existing ailments), are now unable to afford $6k a year in deductibles (plus another $3k or $4k a year in premiums).

Plus, many people who used to be able to afford their insurance, are also currently unable to afford the new premiums/deductibles/co-pays.

This thing is a disaster.

Flashback...

King Barry promises that Obamacare will reduce employers’ health insurance rates “by as much as 3,000%” so they will be able to hand out raises like candy at Halloween.

ANYTHING OBAMA SAYS is worthless.
Watch what he does, and not what he says.
The ILLEGAL ALIEN IN CHIEF wants ~ and is DIRECTING the policies that regulate ALL health care plans
in the United States ~ TO FAIL !
NEVER FORGET THAT !

Many of us have said for many years that Obama is doing this INTENTIONALLY.
He using the old Soviet Plan from 1934 or earlier.

Only idiots and the evil voted for Obama, or ANY of the Democrats.
AND NOW, WE CAN ADD "Establishment Republicans" TO THAT LIST, ALSO!
They've lied to us, constantly, and really are "Collapsing the System".
And now, these "Useful IDIOTS" who voted for them, are buying the lies that "Obamacare was designed to work." ?
It was designed to fail from the start.
THEN ... THEY GO TO THE "SINGLE-PAYER SYSTEM". They've been sucking our wallets dry for over four years now on the "Obamacare" LIE.
AND NOW THEY WANT MORE TAXES ?
Our Founding Fathers would have hung them already!

Lets review:

Who was it that expanded Medicare and Medicaid to cover many, many more people than it was originally designed to cover?

So Democrats,
Sen Mark Kirk's statement Thursday, Dec 1, 2011 ... It's not our fault that DEMOCRATS raided the Social Security Trust Fund.
Let's remember ...

All of the heinous parts really hit home, *after* the election. I bet this one does too. I think we should be eligible for the congressional exemption too. I would like to thank the Supreme Court in advance for their tyranny. Are they exempt also?

“I have Barrett’s esophagus “

A buddy with serious dental problems got estimates of around $45,000 to fix it. (Several implants and graphs required.) His wife, a travel agent and a wonderful researcher, found several forums discussing medical tourism and investigated the doctors, also on-line. They went to Mexico and had the work done there for $11,000. He was thrilled with the result and now he has Hollywood teeth, perfect in every way.

I’m not saying that all things found on the internet are okay. The buyer must beware. But I’d suggest you start by finding a forum that handles your problem and then ask what other have found.

I’ve read that you can have a hip replaced in India at a facility that outclasses many here, for $3,000.

I wish you much luck and would like to know how you fare.

You're right in that there is a link between poor diet and obesity and the rise in diabetes and pre-diabetes. But the rise may also be due to improved and required testing. Years ago, doctors did not test for diabetes unless there were symptoms such as extreme thirst. They also never checked heart patients for diabetes because they weren't aware of the possible correlation between diabetes and heart disease.

I know because both my parents had heart disease. Yet they were not overweight, nor did they exhibit symptoms of diabetes, so they were never tested. I have diabetes and heart disease, but when I was asked about a family history of diabetes I had to answer, “none, as far as I know.”

As we learn more about the relationship between diabetes and heart disease, and other diseases, you can expect more testing for diabetes and consequently, a reported increase in the number of cases of diabetes.
